Looking for a cheap set of clubs for NOW

You can get a new set of Hogan blades for around $250. I agree with Kevin, you don't need to buy the game improvement irons just because your a beginner. If you have decent club head speed and make pretty good contact theres nothing wrong with going with a blade, especially if your going to take some lessons from a good teacher. The long irons may give you a bit of trouble and truthfully a couple of hybrids can take their place. Here is a simply fact the club companies don't want you to know, you can not buy a game.

I thought of this option Matt, but in reading a recent thread I thought alot of the members here did not think the clubs were that good. I know I don't need anything great right now, but are the reviews mixed because really good players are talking "shop" and if I get some hogans, since I really don't know any better...that will be okay for me?

I just bought 2 sets of the '98-'02 model and like them. These were made before Callaway bought them out. Callaway went and made the same model for the 50 anniversary model but shipped the manufacturing over to China. The '98 model was the last apex made at the Fort Worth factory which are great clubs, especially for $250. When I was still working at the Golf haus we sold these for around $600 and I believe the retail was around $1000. The mizunos are good clubs too but your not gonna get a great deal like the Hogans on them.

Thanks for the good Advice. Ill look at the mizunos, seems like a favorite around here...and HJack is going to work out fine. Ill get a Driver, 3wood and 5wood..SWEET. Thanks again Howard.

good deal man. I actually agree with what everyone has been saying about blades, and I have felt this way for a while. when I graduated from high school, my dad took me to Edwin Watts, and told me to pick out whatever irons I wanted. It came down to 2, the Cleveland TA5s and a set of Mizzuno blades (forget the model now this was 4 years ago)... The Clevelands have been great to me over the years but dang... I wish i would have gotten the Mizzunos...

Oh, and my dad told me to get the cavity backs because "im not a pro" thanks dad!!

How about a compromise?

Find some low offset "players" cavity backs. Your just looking for a set to learn with for a year or two. The advice to get fit by ping is good. At least you would know what lie angle, length, and shaft would fit you the best. There are tons of really good irons out there for cheap if you know what you are looking for. I could set you up with a set of Pings for cheap but they fit me and may not fit you. Go see a Ping fitter and work from there.

I'm late to the show, but Mizuno MP 14's can be found for really cheap-- $150--$250.

I'm putting my mizu' blades up for my hybrid setup.... Tinker totter.

I also do not think that there's anything wrong with a newbie learning with blades... I did back in the late 80's--early 90's as a child. I'm not completely sold on the mystique of blades; I just play them because they look sexy in my golf bag.

GOT MY HOGAN BLADES TODAY

Hey guys, I really appreciate all of the good advice and time you took to help me out. I decided to get the Hogan Apex Blades and they came in the mail TODAY. AHHHH SWEET, CHEAP and REALLY REALLY SEXY looking. I feel like I just commited a crime....CHEAP and SEXY. I think they are SEXIER than Elin, especially post Charlie Axel:p

Sweet irons...sweet deal.

Don't worry they ain't that hard to hit you'll be fine.

You'll appreciate how they look too. It didn't take long for me to wish I had gotten a smaller nicer looking set when I was starting out.

Cavity back, schmavildy schmack.
Game improvement iron, lame improvement iron.

(I mean the lunker ones)
