Well yeah, I wasn't talking about his score though. Oosthuizen, and Schwartzel both have a LOOOOOOOONG way to go to be hall of famers. Not that South African's in general have anything to do with the intentions of this thread. I'm just saying I'd like to see more then 3 wins out of the guy before I mention the words "best swing ever" and his name.

Yeah I know.....just being a smart a$$:p

I liked Ernie's swing back in the day. Just a little hyperbole on the best swing ever I think. Though I also like Louis' swing a lot, more than Schwartzel's. JMHO.

For "best swing ever' sounds like different people have different definitions of best. So for Johnny, he wants the swing to have a certain level of production. Personally I'd ignore "outcome" since putting and short game goes such a long way in determining tournament results.

Just to point out, many people in the past said Purtzer or Elkington had the best swing on tour, but...production wise...only one major from those guys plus a couple of regular wins.

Ernie has a great smooth looking tempo, but I don't think his swing is near as good as it was 15 years ago.

Oosthuizen has a beautiful swing....what I am sick of, is anytime someone says this person or that has a beautiful swing, maybe one of the best ever...someone always brings up Hogan and Snead....as if no one is allowed to have a good swing but those two.

Project 1.86 ought to be able to help define some parameters, such as a swing that has HSP VSP and AoA within certain a certain narrow window for the golfer, and that he is able to repeat being in the window 90% of the time under tournament conditions...though some may want to add being able to do hit the parameter window when pressure is the greatest.

I might add...we have no real info on Snead and Hogan on this and would only be able to derive some guesses from Fairways hit and GIRs and such. They may not really hold up to scrutiny.

Give me a break.

He said he has the best swing *ever.*

I can understand some hyperbole...but I think this is wayyyy too strong of hyperbole.

I think we can break down swings into 2 different ways.

1. Pure ballstriking related statistics.

2. Combination of ballstriking stats and swing mechanics.

The problem is that Oosthuizen's ballstriking related stats are not all that impressive this year. So, that eliminates #1. If his ballstriking stats were in the 'really good, but not the best', then I could see. But that's not even the case. They are very average. And that's looking at stats like driving distance, fwy %, avg. distance to edge of fairway, proximity to the cup from certain distances, etc.

Personally, I'd take guys like Boo Weekley, Heath Slocum, Charles Warren and Hunter Mahan over Oosthuizen at this point in time. I like their mechanics and they have much stronger stats (Warren isn't on Tour this year, but he's been phenomenal in the previous years).

This ain't even about Hogan and Snead...it's about other golfers who have as strong, if not stronger mechanics and who are also much stronger statistically. Then you have somebody like Furyk, who according to Trackman has the most consistently zeroed out downswing on Tour and has good ballstriking stats.

It doesn't have jack to do with 'no one being allowed to have a good swing', it's about making bold statements without much backing it up.

Rich, I agree with Boo (my absolute favorite swing of all time), Heath, Warren and whoever else you mentioned. Those are also some of my favorite swings. The OP asked a question and as with most questions about current players, according to the internet, they don't cut the mustard with the venerable Snead & Hogan. It just gets old, is all I was saying.
