Mind v. Mechanics

I am completely SOLD on Brian's Sweet spot theory.

This is too important to me to bury in the 10th page of the shanking thread. I have dealt with shanks for years. No one has more experience fighting them than me. NO ONE.

I finally realized that no matter what conditons I was creating at address to prevent shanks, my athleticism was causing them? Sounds silly, right.

That's because my mind processed the feel of the sweet spot at the hosel. I direct force at the hosel so well that no matter what position you put me in, I can still hit the hosel. I have ingrained the feel of the sweet spot within the hosel so well, that I could shank from anywhere.

So with all of the ANTI-shank positions, I was still shanking. Today, I reversed it. I purposely put myself in positions that would CAUSE a shank. I crowded the ball with my weight on my heels and my hands real close to me. But I processed the sweet spot in my mind as closer toward the toe of the club- in the middle of the clubface. With that in mind (no pun intended) I couldn't shank.

I literally hit 100 balls at the range from all kinds of positions. I even purposely hit over the top with no axis tilt but my mind adjusted and would not let me shank.

I now have no doubt that your internal processing of how to direct the force of the club through the sweetspot overrides bad mechanics.

Can we go on now?

I know...I know, Darby.

Good job.

Well done!! - "Educated Hands" is what Homer Kelly called it...if you want to read the book then look in Chapter 5...

"The hands are the 'command post' for all feel processing. As the stroke proceeds, they dictate to the feet as certainly as they dictate to the club....regardless of the amount of technical know-how and practice, uneducated hands can nullify it all and never even be suspected. Monitor all three elements of the club (1-L) by way of the hands - never directly."

"Educated hands" means getting your brain to listen to the signal the hands are sending....then allowing your body to do whatever is needed.

Confirmed on the course. Out of 14 drives Sunday, did not miss the fairway by more than 5 yards on any. Only misses into greens were on or right near the fringe, except I went in one green side bunker and I skulled one 3-iron- my only miss-hit of the day- both bogies.

All shots except one were flush off the clubface.

I did, however, miss 7 putts inside 5 feet and 2 more inside 10 feet, so I shot an 81.

My only swing thought was "Process the sweet spot with your eyes and feel that through the hands and arms into your head."

Sounds like you have hands sensation controlling your pivot!:)

This is an approximation of how much brain is used for sensory processing per body part region. Why wouldn't we use our hand sensations ....pp3 alone represents a far greater area of sensation than certain other very sensitive areas... thats why we like golf so much!

The Johnny Thomas is smaller that I expected.

Another reiteration that Brian was right. Chris Hamburger's mechanical change* and Brian's sweet spot theory have made this game fun again for me.

Shot 80 today with a Quintuple bogie-- (Tin cupped it trying to reach a par 4 over water- drives were actually hit well, but just didn't clear water)

Never has a swing thought meant so much to me. Never have I repeatedly hit so flush.

Just need to learn to put....

*He suggested that I show daylight between my forearms (Left on top of right) just before impact, with tilt, belt buckle facing target without sliding.
