Moe Norman's setup, a cure for underplane?

I was messing around at the range yesterday and was fighting my typical underplane/shut face balls going left problem, when me and another guy at the range started talking about Moe Norman

We started discussing his setup and how he set the driver sometimes as far as a foot behind the ball on the ground at setup.

I started playing with this setup and I'll be darned if it doesn't force you to stay on or above the plane, if you drop under plane you'll hit the ground well before getting to the ball.

Made me wonder if this was Moe's way of making sure he didn't drop under plane, maybe he fought a hook early in his career.

Moe said that the address position actually made it impossible for him to take the clubhead outside.

Also, the address position he had was due to him having a 'flip book' of Hogan's sequence in this pic

Moe thought that Hogan addressed the ball a foot behind the ball so he started addressing the ball that way as well.

Sorry for this off topic question to camera geeks-

Would editing or technology cause the frames between 5 and 6 or Hogan's Top/End to be dropped from this historical sequence?

Interesting Richie, I didn't know that.

I will say that this approach does lend itself toward a more onplane or above plan move. Similar to Brian's concept of hitting drivers off the deck to help cure coming in under plane.

I have gotten really good results using this as a drill. I read Jim Mclean gave this drill to Faxon when he worked with him. I noticed it helps feel the pressure point in the left arm/chest more effectively, and helps me get the hands more in on the takeaway. Never had the nerve to try on the course, but in practice, it seems to help an underplane move. One real issue, it discourages a backswing pivot so you have to make sure you pump off the left foot as Brian suggests in SD.

I can't figure out exactly how Moe hits it.

Straight up.

I do not know.

From that setup.

Surely I will give it a good bit more attention at some point.
