more thoughts/questions on Hogan

I have the golf channel tape where mcClain analizes Hogan's swing and teachings. The analysis is nothing exciting but I like to watch hogans swing and look at it frame by frame. One thing I notice is that it does not look like Hogan used the ball position he described in his book. His driver looked to be 1-2 inches inside his heel, Irons looked to be in the middle of his stance on some of the shots. Now I know that camera angle plays a part and while some of them are off, others look to be in good position. ANyone have any insight into hogans ball posisiton?

His ball position may appear to be moving because Hogan changed the width and the orientation of his stance from driver to wedge. There's also the possibility that he was playing shots that weren't standard shots.

hogan said he played all clubs off of left heel and adjusted the width of stance and openess, closedness accordingly. In the video I dont know that any appeared to be off of his left heel. Understood that specialty shots may come in to play but then again every set up I saw would have had to have been a specialty shot

well we know there are some people on this site that have a good amount of knowledge about hogan, Brian has done a good job attracting them. Hopefully they will enlighten us. out of all the golfers I am interested in Hogan the most, but then again that tends to happen when you read so much a someones book

IMO, you will learn more by watching what Hogan does, rather than what he says in his books.

I highly recommend it. It's a short video, shot by a spectator at the 1967 Masters. It's in color, with slow motion views of Hogan's actual range practice session.

You answered you own question. Go do an experiement:

Setup with any club with your normal ball position
now open your stance, where does the ball "magically move in your stance?"
now start over and close your stanc, where does the ball "maginally move in your stance?"

Buy the Shell's match where Hogan played Snead. It is available on DVD now. It is an awesome video, worth every penny for the Hogan or Snead fan.

but a couple of his irons appeared to be about dead center, he could not open it and close it that much

if you have a short or mid iron and playing it off the left heel with the correct stance width and open your stance if will appear in the center.

Camera angle will play a role as well

He also had a sizeable hip bump/slide forward on the downswing: he talked of moving his right knee toward the ball but his left knee was the one that took the world tour. This effectively moved his ball back in his stance causing his club to be delofted.
