My lesson with Brian

I just want to give KUDOS, CREDIT, APPLAUSE, TOTAL HOMAGE (edited) to Brian. This was my second lesson with Brian. First time around, really worked on a lot of the NSA swing. That was two years ago. It really helped with my clubface, but I started to have problems between a snap hook or a push slice. Sucks when both sides of the fairway are in play. Tried tinkering with my clubface, worrying about the D-plane, then finally decided to get a tune-up.

After watching me hit a few balls, Brian honed in on my problems, being very underplane and aiming too far left. Basically OK on the backswing, except probably one that is too long, but on the downswing, I'd pivot so quickly that my club would be "stuck behind me" and also my hand motion would leave the face wide open. Thus either time I'd have to fire my hands to close the clubface, and if mistimed get a hook or slice. After working on aiming my body, he had me work on what felt like throwing away the clubhead (he called it "making it tumble outside") and coming OTT. Then I had to shift and delay my pivot a beat. For those who know NHA, he had me try to hit my ball and the next ball on the arc in one swing. Once I started doing it, Brian did a video of my swing and it looks like I swung a normal on-plane motion. Defintely a very big AHA on "feel is not real" for me.

Have only got in one round since then (bad ankle sprain sidelined me for a while). Was at a reunion for my wife's family and had to use borrowed clubs. When I was able to trust and execute the changes, I was able to hit some nice shots. Can't wait to try out with my own clubs. Thanks a lot Brian!

Sorry for the off topic post but.. I keep reading this word "props" as in "give props to Brian". Clearly, it has a meaning like accolades and it seems to be an abbreviation. What is the root word? Thanks for your consideration.

Slang for proper respect. :)

Tumble

the tumble! been waiting to hear more about this...think it's part of the baby fade pattern...

The way Brian explained it was feeing like at the top of the swing to rotate the forearms so that the clubshaft was pointing behind me and to the outside. He initially told me to push the shaft out with my right hand, but I do it better with a feel of pulling the handle into my right forearm (it reminded me of a move with a bo staff). This my right forearm on top and keeps the clubhead from being lagging the inside. The tumble needed to be started before I drop the arms and before I pivoted. I now do the tumble as my waggle (kind of the TGM "program the machine" [am I allowed to say that?]). Looks funny, but the swing is totally orthodox.

BTW Kevin, please note the edited post.

What part of club points behind you and to outside? Butt of club?

He tried to get me to do it in my lesson but I didn't get it either as I was/am a big right field swinger. He then has me line up, walks over to me and says "try and hit a pull hook". Needless to say I hit the straightest ball I had hit all day. That's the great thing about Brian as he finds a way to relate to the individual student to make them understand what he wants them to do. Some teachers just can't do that.

I basically tried that last night. I've been either really ON or really OFF with the driver lately. I will either crank it down the middle or hit a big push or long high lazy hook. The most common lately being the big push or push fade. I got rid of the quick little low hooks from last year. Last night I told my buddy I was going to try and pull it and I hit the most beautiful high 5 yard draw that went about 270. But it only lasted for 1 shot. After that I was thinking too much and sent that thing everywhere. :(

Is this a variation of the extreme of this drill which is to miss the first ball and hit the second one?

Could you explain a bit more where the balls were positioned?

Thanks for the post

balls are positioned to follow yellow brick road. Still need detail regarding the tumble. Funny how lining up too far left contibutes to too inside on downswing. I lined up right on every drive I hit last weekend and hit the ball 30 yards farther. NHA backswing, hit the second ball. If I lined up left, weak push. I have never hit the driver as well as I am hitting it now. On a course where I used to belong, I was hitting my second shots from places I have never seen. For realworld results, this is the place.
