Neck disability

This question is a followup for me personally on the head and neck interference thread. I have a movement disorder (Cervical Dystonia) that makes my head turn to the right. Is there some other point of my body I can focus on to sort of cancel out the need to look right at the ball or take the aligment of my head and neck out of the equation?

Tough question. I think only someone really qualified can answer this, a distonia expert, which I am not...I'd say see an expert that has dealt with this EXACT problem..make sure it is specific, and find out the doctors credentials. Ask lots of specific questions..good luck.

VJ, Doctors know about Dystonia but not the golf swing. I think it would be very hard to find a combination M.D and golf instructor. If anyone knows how to work around standard or orthodox head and neck alignment it would be someone here. What would a golfer do if they had no head and neck. Try to think of it that way. Thanks for trying though.

Sorry to disagree, but NO and I'm not "trying". I have experience with doctors and distonia in my field and others. I can ask a doctor on distonia in my chops(embouchure, lips used to play my instrument) neck, shoulder whatever and they really have no F$%#ing clue what I'm talking about, even though they know distonia from a medical textbook they covered in college for a second, in comparison to all the other stuff they covered. It won't be easy to find someone that actually knows what they are talking about, but it's worth the trouble. Distonia is a difficult and very troublesome thing to figure on...My advice. Find a HIGHLY qualified neurologist that has dealt with your SPECIFIC condition before and has HAD SUCCESS TREATING IT and seek them out. Ask lots of questions and don't be jerked around, alot of "specialists" will do that.
Take it for what you will:) Good luck.

Not sure if you need help with this particular issue (below) Walt but I'll talk cause it is important nonetheless...

...that is to say:

It IS important to let doctors know what you really think. He/she's the Doc but no one has as much of an interest in your own health as you do. State your case, baby.

I am not a "Doctor Basher" by any means (trust me) but I do expect them to be thorough.

Waiting for surgery for very bad undiagnosed sinus problems...

(Well, we knew there was a problem but did not identify what was causing it for 23 years.)

If something is causing serious problems take it seriously and expect your Doc to do the same. I'd like to think he/she should have as much concern as you do.

I am not asking for help in treating my dystonia. I have had it for 10 years and know that most doctors are clueless and greedy. Two grand for 15 min of treatment. 750.00 for the neuro and 1250.00 for the pharm. I am asking for a way to improve my swing. For that, I need a swing that ignores the fact that I have a head and neck if that is possible or at least one that will be minimally effected by the tension in my head and neck at setup. I know that is very far from orthodox and a tall order. Basically, are there things I can do at setup to minimize the fact that I more times than not can not keep my eye on the ball. If not, then so be it. I would like to play better but am not a total hacker either.

I really hope most doctors are not clueless and greedy.

Quite a few (good) golfers do not look at the ball at impact, I do believe.

Annika, Duval, Joe Durant. Surely there are lots more.

So what you are looking for is a way to have solid contact and reduce strain on the neck?

I've always thought balance at address to be important.

I like to find that spot at address where my body feels balanced. For me that spot is very much on the heels. (and for some reason it helps me to stick my ass out no jokes please).

From there I just let my arms hang loosely.

I don't know for sure but I'd also imagine that sweeping the ball more will help your neck. (no huge divots and violent contact with the ground)

Take more club and swing easier whenever you can.

Sensicores?

Thanks for the answer B-Man. I can't reduce the strain on my neck. And sorry to say but most doctors I have met are clueless and greedy. But that is beside the point. I can't always keep my eye on the ball but I can keep my head behind the ball which I have been practicing. I have also been working on a shorter swing with more acceleration (faster tempo) and more open hips. It is working well. Now, I just have to figure out how to putt.
