New 3 wood??

ok, apparently this is the year of the 3 wood, everything is 17 yards longer.

this year, I am in the market for a new hybrid and 3 wood, however, when I go the golf store, they all appear to be huge, like old drivers. Have any of you hit the new pings, taylor mades, adams, etc. and how are they off the deck. I typically am comfortable with my driver off the deck, main use for a three wood for me is trying to reach par 5's in two.

Just concerned they are so big, they might be hard to get up off the deck.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

I'm using a Cobra S2 3-wood. It works great off the deck; I'm very pleased with the performance. The size of the head is not an issue.

Good luck in your search.

I have a TM Superfast 2.0 4 wood... the head is large, but for some reason, I am really able to hit it well. For me, I find that it seems to respond best with a little more downward blow than you would think you should give to a fairway wood. Haven't hit the RBZ, but I know guys who have switched, aren't club ho's, and tell me it is indeed much longer that what they were playing before.

Hope this helps!

Adams F11. Long from tee and high launch from the deck. Surprisingly the speed slot or whatever it's called is not a visual distraction (for me at least). I think they have a newer version out as well...

I, too, have heard good things about the newest Taylor Made Stuff.

The way it was explained to me was that TM put 'driver' faces on the fairways metals and hybrids.. more 'springy' by a local Pro I know (driving range owner); said he picked up 30+ yards with fairway metals and hybrids. He sells TM exclusively, btw.

I may look at updating from Ping G-10s to TM (D, 3W, 5W, 3H and 4H). Only thing is.. I'm not a hype-type.

Problem is that when i am hitting 3 wood either off the tee or ground I am not totally worried about how far it will go. Now when they make one that goes 17 yards straighter please call me.

Wishon 929 here... Low profile head and as close to max COR as a 3wood can get.

...and you can bend the hosel, too.

The RBZ fairway woods must have driver-like COR; all our members are finding that they do go much further. I don't mind their look either.

That being said, the Callaway Razr Fit is the first 3 wood I've really liked in far too long.

Not so much further per se, just feels very easy to hit. Almost like cheating. Never tried the Superfast or Burners so I have nothing to compare it against in that aspect. TaylorMade does have some legit marketing, though. Hope those guys are being paid handsomely.

We tested the Adams Speedline Super XTD fairway woods and hybrids (the one Kenny Perry giggles about...) last week on FS and its no joke. My assistant carried the 15 degree fairway wood 270 and we were consistently getting 1.52 Smash #'s on the fairway and hybrid.

They are a bit expensive compared to other brands, but they are smaller and sleeker than the Taylor Mades.

This is my 3 wood as well, mainly for all the reasons the OP mentioned. The same COR as a driver, can be hand picked for loft, and has a bendable hose for lie and face angle adjustments. Oh, and it's Donkey Kong long.:)

I am playing the Wishon 949 right now and I like it a lot. But I'm considering trying out the Wishon 929, because I absolutely love the sole design -- I am playing the new 775 hybrids with that same sole design and it is really impressive.

...and I have been playing my Wishon 525GRT #3 for ages and it is still in the bag (of course on steel). When I have more time I'll revert to newer clubs that Tom designed after and surely will try them. 929 is on my list as well.

Cheers

Sometimes when I hit 3W off the ground I'd be happy with one that WENT 17 yards!
