where's the drill?

T
Bill Melhorn used to have his students swing the club in a continuos circle. These circle drills done one or two handed show how the wrists should bend and where the "flick" is. Try it, you'll feel very it very quickly. John Rohan-Weaver used to make a training aid that reinforced that feeling, don't remember what it's called.

.

Where can we find this drill illustrated/demonstrated? Thanks.

The Bill Melhorn grass whip training tool or simply a regular grass whip by true temper available at most hardware stores demonstrates the lineup quite well.

It makes you brush the grass, if you are steep you will chunk the grass whip into the ground.

Curiously I did drop 5 mph in club head speed on the launch monitor we have earlier in the week. I just focused on no FATS through the swing, esp. through impact. The dispersion was better though. So must be doing something wrong, maybe still need to feel FATS in the first half of the downswing? Will report back when I get chance to make more efforts :)

I am having some success with feeling like the FATS is a quick burst added just before the right hand passes the outside of the right thigh and is gone right as it passes the inside of the right thigh. My drill is to basically loosen my right hand grip through impact like Fred Couples does in this youtube clip:

On the site below, the writer attributes to Mehlhorn the idea that the club swings around a fulcrum point located on the grip between the two hands. Sounds like the coupling point concept.

It is because the club swings around its FULCRUM, not around the grip cap, and the fulcrum is located between the two hands.

Complete golf instruction, simplified for the beginner, thorough enough for the professional

Just got back from the range. No swing speed to report (will get that on weekend) but feels like I'm swinging harder and better than previous attempts. I think the idea of just 'letting' the wrists do the flick is correct. I've struggled with losing the club at the top of the backswing and regripping slightly, so tend to hold on tight with the fingers. I think the key for me is to ensure the wrists are loose, even if the grip is firm, and then just allow the club to rotate around the coupling point.

Something that is interesting to think about is at higher speeds (well, some are faster I'm sure, 110 mph usually) I can feel like there is force directed in other directions than normal to the arc. When I did try this before I was trying to feel a 'pure' feeling of normal force only, and probably slowed down. My intent today was still to apply force only in the appropriate direction but I suppose a side effect of the fast moving club is pressure on the hands in other directions. I may have confused this for poor execution before..
