Alot of guys like yourself aim slighlty left and play an educated push. Just watch an event on TV.

Yup, I have noticed this kind of variation being used to good effect. I have had some success with a kind of aim-left-push-fade shot as an anti-hook/block "band-aid" solution when I was hooking the a** off everything. But I aways considered this shot to be a temporary measure. Maybe I was wrong.

Also, I think your face is turned off the plane too soon to play from the inside on a flatter plane angle.

You mean the face is too closed pre-impact, right? Do you think my left hand grip causes this? Or do I need to try to keep it a bit more open by controlling the face/left wrist?

What I noticed is how quickly you are done turning your upper body. You have completed your turn before the club gets to parallel and from there it's all arm lift to the top. Your right shoulder gets deep real quick. How far do you hit driver?

Yes, Matt, my funny takeaway move is a kind of "shift and mega-turn" which causes an early turn.

I hit the driver quite far, about 300yds when I catch the sweetspot.

As long as your not losing power with that move and your consistent I wouldn't worry about it then. If you are looking to move toward more orthodox I would work on starting the swing with the arms and shoulders more of a one piece takeaway. I like the old drill of putting a book or a piece of wood behind the club head to give you the feel of the one piece takeaway. That may also help with the little sway. All in all a little cleaning up and your on your way to some good golf.

martin, do I have to turn more to swing more left. Or just move the arms/hands more left consciously?
The strange lateral move is something that crept in when I was working many years ago on changing my naturally wide arc takeaway move to a more "early set, on a flatter plane" concept a la LeadyB. This kind of messed me up big time, and I've never really had a nice smooth takeaway since. The more "nervous" I get the more I do it. Interestingly enough though, I'm still only moving about half a head to the right during the whole backswing, which is no more than many top players. I just do it all in one go.

I enjoyed the bit about you shooting 10 under trying to fade it. I play the same way. I try and fade it and hit it pretty straight most of the time. I draw my irons at will, but most shots are hold cuts and on line.

"Trying to fade it" usually means you are adding a bit more Manzella carry and sequencing the downswing a little differently.

I'm not going to talk you into keeping your head still, but I'd like you to try and "maintain your perspective" a little more. For giggles, put an object (a box works best) and address the ball. How much of the sides of the box can you see while addressing the ball? Make a swing and see how well you can keep the visual perspective intact. You can do it with your periphery.

The reason I say this, is I get the same head move first thing going too and it happens when I get nervous! I get inside out and run out of right arm. I don't block it, but I sure can hook it.

Cheers,

MC

I've not really worked on my game seriously for many years now. Just P***ed about trying thiis and that when the urge took me. Many have said I should be able to play decent golf if I stopped my crazy little move in the takeaway, but the reality was when I stopped it my swing became kind of static and undynamic so I just lazily accepted it and played semi-decent golf.

I did try the book drill, but it didn't really stop me moving off it. Maybe I should have perseviered for longer.

I can hook it with the best of em too! But my shot when I get nervous is more of a block-fade. I just get the hands too far in front of me and the ball thus leaving the face open.

Interesting idea with the box, that's a new one to me. I like it a lot because it makes keeping the head more stationary a FUNCTIONAL requirement rather than a FORM issue.

I agree that when trying to fade it the sequencing is different - I suppose Manzella carry is similar to accelerating the shoulders earlier hence why it leads to different sequencing.
