one of the greatest quote from Lee Trevino or what

Not as Floyd or Trevino tell it. He gets there and asked the guy picking up his clubs who's this Mexican kid I'm playing? Trevino says that's me amigo. It actually went for two days and on the second day, Floyd did win some, not all of his money back. Raymond told him you're way too good to be working the pro shop. Trevino said I still gotta clean the carts. Who knows what actually happened but Floyd's visit did light some fire in Trevino apparently. The other quote that is great is, and this is Ray telling the story. When they asked Floyd about playing this kid who played for cash his reply was: "sure I'll play anybody I never heard of".

Yeah that sounds about right....its been a while since I read it, dont even remember where.....may have read about it in a book about high stakes poker & gambling in TX.

One more quick note about this. It was at Horizon Hills CC, not Tenison Park, which was a legendary gamblers haven. Titanic Thompson and the heavy hitters at Tenison arranged it but Trevino WAC working by the overeat Horizon. Great lore...

But he still hit it much HIGHER, balls are easier to stop with height and not spin.

Oh, my, yes! My first Masters was 1974 and he hit these towering draws with the irons. And the ground seemed to shake at impact when you were near him: everyone instinctively gasped at the violence. Stood right next to Jack in an early round when he thinned a long iron into the pond on 15; he knew it right away: he said "come around...it will never get there", "oh, yes you will" a woman in the gallery said. Splash! Player won that one with a blind second shot on 71st hole he knocked stiff.

Typical. Snead finished second a number of times and his ballstriking was totally suited for the Open setup.

Snead was terrible at yardages and was prone to over-clubbing, death at the US Open. When I saw him play at the Masters in the 1970s, it surprised me that on every approach shot, it seemed, after he'd been clubbed, he'd turn to the caddie and say "Are you sure this is enough?" "That's the club!" was always the reply, and he'd knock it up there into birdie range every time.

I guess he should have used the same caddy at the U.S. Open.

Yea what a great shot. A 9 iron that almost went in! Like the one he hit at Oakland Hills in 62 PGA over that huge willow. Man Player could golf his ball. Tough cookie.

Yet he never ate a cookie...very ironic. "In my lifetime, Ive done over 14 million sit ups!"

Sheer grit, determination, and an absolute certainty he could beat anybody. First world traveler, one of the first fitness dudes. The only thing that ever haunted GP were the accusations that he was a bit uh, liberal with his interpretations of the rules. It is also said of player that one year he had a 90% bunker save rate? I find that one a little tough to believe...

The good Augusta caddies were legendary. However, the USGA may have forced players to use useless, local caddies at the US Open in the old days. Either way, Snead should have figured out a way to deal with it. Too stubborn, I guess, to admit a shortcoming.

And Walter Johnson threw 102mph...I got that one recently. The older we get the better they used to be. I like Snead...."son, I used to fly it right over those trees. Of course when I was ur age those trees we're (this) tall.
