Passive Arms and hands

Hi,

Becuase of inconsistency I'm trying to experiment (worst thing) with trying to get the Arms and hands completely passive on the downswing. More of a controlled by the body swing.

This has given me some good results and from time to time hit them pure and they really do fly effortlessly (off the fairway anyway), however from the rough I tend to start hacking , hitting it out using the arms sometimes producing disasterous results.

Question.

Does Brian and Homer promote passive arms and hands on the downswing ? I mean completely passive holding on for the ride!

Any others agree with this or should I be focusing on the hitting of the ball and the arms ?

I'm a TGM newbie so be gentle.

I have just read the thread Hand Controlled Pivot vs. Pivot Controlled Hands but not sure if this answer my question...

Well....

Patty,

The answer to the question:

"Are my arms supposed to be passive in the downswing?"

They can be. They don't have to be.

If you are very strong, adding some RIGHT ARM can help.

But, the best way, in my opinion, is to LEAVE your hands at the top and allow your PIVOT and gravity to bring them to and through the ball. THEN and only then, if you can do that effectively and have PLENTY of PIVOT SPEED, try to add some right arm.

But, I'd work on Plan A first.

Be active throughout the body (including the hands and arms for pulling the club), except the wrists, for "swinging".

Be active throughout the body (including the hands, arms and wrists for pushing the club) for "hitting".

Be active then passive throughout the body (including the hands, arms and wrists for releasing the club) for "snapping".

Brian - you state "adding some right arm might help?

Are you referring to the right upper arm or right forearm, and when in the downswing does it apply power?

Jeff.

The triceps straighten the arm. Last time I checked they are in the upper arm. ;)

But, forearm strength DOES HELP GOLFERS. So, they are doing something.

Like I have said on here 10000000000 times before, USE BOTH ARMS!!!!

Brian - when you say the triceps, then I presume that you are referring to the right elbow straightening action that occurs in the late phase of the downswing (after the delivery position - when the clubshaft is parallel to the ground, parallel to the ball-target line, and along the toe line). I was wondering whether clubhead speed in the late phase of the downswing was already optimised by centrifugal forces set into play by the central torque generator (pivot action) and a good (unencumbered) wrist release action. How can right arm action in the late downswing supplement clubhead speed without interference/impedance? Is it a conscious action?

Jeff.

I would also like to see numbers that compare speed between centrifugal force as compared to intentional rear arm thrust.

I'm trying to take my damn right arm out of my swing. Learning how to actually swing the club is hard. I have plenty of distance, so I'm not concerned with maximum power. I wouldn't mind tapering my drives down to 275 carry and playing a control game... Let the irons do the talking. I can knock it 290 +, but my best round was when I drove the ball 260 in the middle everytime, and rifled my approach shots with long irons (fairway woods are for girls.)

I'm one of those people that took the whole flat left wrist, bent right wrist, and dig it to China mantra to heart. Time to get my Ernest Jones on!

Brian, would you use this strategy with small swings like chips and pitches?

thanks
