thanks for the great pictures. Would love to hear the academy's take on his pivot. Seems like it comes right out of the perfect pivot article.

I saw Payne Stewart play in the Kemper Open in 1982 or 1983 with Bobby Clampett and Hal Sutton at the Kemper at Congressional. All three played a straight ball, with Stewart hitting an odd hook every now and then. There were really good ballstrikers at this tournament, Stewart hit the ball very high and very long. The most impressive were Clampett and Mac O'Grady as far as sound and trajectory. They compressed the ball and hit bullets. I walked along with Mac's Asian wife for a hole or two, she was very nice.

Thanks for the beautiful pics, lia. Payne used the classic Mike Austin swing. When Austin was asked if any pros used his swing, he replied that Ian Wosnam and Payne Stewart did.

I can see from the pics that he takes the club away keeping the face square to the clubhead arc. Through impact, his wrists flap with vertical hinging action, and he has a late swivel.

edit: I meant vertical hinge. Sorry, not familiar with TGM terms.

Free hip turn.

Classic pure swingers rope handle.

Without any additives.

No flapping in that move... Payne did have a habit of flapping his mouth....

lia,

Add my thanks as well for the great pics of simply one of the best golf swings of all time. Only thing better is a video of Payne's elegant swing so that one can appreciate his lovely smooth, surpy tempo.

Be carefull with that Austin talk over here petemoss.:) BTW-That's horizontal hinging.

Worth noting Payne's left foot action...no slamming down the left heel here then...see how the left foot turns in the follow through...I think he would have kept that swing going a long time...

Oh, and then there's the "slight" axis tilt...:)

Whatever it's called, the clubface goes from closed to square to open through impact. A slapping motion done with the wrists.

Jim--you're right, Pete's wrong. Payne goes from open, to square, to closed, like any good golfer EVER.

My appologies! I got confused with that horizontal/ vertical hinge terminology. What I mean to describe is how the clubface approaches the ball hooded or delofted. After impact, the clubface has more than normal loft. Guess you could call it a scooping or conical blow.

How can you tell that from this picture? The clubface is approaching impact from inside with an open face. We don't know what happened EXACTLY at impact but we do know that it was in a "closing motion" through the ball as the picture indicates.

Also the only way you can interpret more loft on the club is that he has more axis tilt at this point and it may look like you are seeing more loft on the club because his left shoulder is much higher.
