Peter Kostis - Wow

I peronally struggle to believe that Faldo is as clueless about technique as he comes across. Regardless of this, the broadcasters dont want guys who sound as if they should be on Open University DVDs, cause Joe Public dont want to know about the details. It gives him a sore head. They want high numbers of watchers, just as the tabloid press want high numbers of copies sold. Neither of them care about the truth/facts.

Makes sense. Or at least- it would seem that's how they do it.

I remember thinking that Faldo seemed to be more interesting when they had him on TGC doing golf swing lessons recently. (in studio..."Faldos lessons" type-deal)

Its a tougher job than some here might seem to think. Im no fan of Kostis, and think his technical analysis is a joke. But I dont understand the hatred. Its like people have this axe to grind with guys like him like he symbolizes all the people that somehow have wrecked their golf games with bad advice. Its very easy to sit here and say a guy sucks when you've never had a micrphone in front of you and had to describe a swing to a broad viewing audience. I do, however, think that CBS would be better served to search out a replacement to do those types of commentary.

Now Manzella? He would be brilliant at this type of thing.

he was the gold standard for the mental game of golf from about '87 to '96

Agree.

Another example that rarely gets mentioned: that approach at the Ryder Cup (year?) and subsequent putt against C.Strange to win it.

I may be wrong, but I believe a lot of pros knew he was the best mentally and this caused mental meltdowns in some. I suspected that the G. Norman was finished at the Masters when he began nervously licking his lips after each shot.

I agree with Kevin. Mature.

Why waste time and energy trashing these guys. If you know better then be content with that. No need to advertise your superior knowledge here. Say something that will help me golf better.

Maybe we could get "Sir Nick" to explain how we can learn to "fire" our rotator cuffs. ;)

There was a time when "Sir Nick" as he demands to be called was as good as anyone that ever stuck a peg in the ground. But his commentary on how the greatest players in the world go about there business leaves me wanting to change channels.

From his description of how to hit a push draw at the Sony Open last year to his description of how Tiger consciously " fire's his rotator cuffs'' just displays his arrogance. I was fortunate enough to work for one of golfs top on course announcers last year and he had some interesting comments about " Sir Nick" .

Not trying to start an argument here, but I loved Jack Nicklaus as a player but he had no business in the broadcast booth. JMO

Good post, Ronnie.

This is my take on these guys on TV:

I'll get my chance and I'll be way better at it.

I think golf is a game where one golfer feels empathetic towards other golfers. Much like boxing where usually boxers do not show up other boxers when the winner is declared because they know the amount of work they put into training for the match and the heartbreak they go thru when they lose.

With golf, it's very similar. I'm pretty confident that every single golfer on this forum has, at one time, been thru the exact same low points in their golfing career. And they've gone thru the same experience of going to Teacher X and Teacher X telling them this and it doesn't work because it's physically impossible and then getting conflicting statements and philosophies from Teacher's A, B and C which is really confusing because Teacher's A, B, C and X are all considered to be the tops in their profession.

And if you put any time, effort and money into this game and getting better...when you finally realize the truth on some things that are clear cut....you may want to strangle Teacher's A, B, C and X for teaching stuff that is so incorrect and caused you nothing but time, effort, money, frustration and anger.

And it's something that you probably wouldn't want to put your worst enemy through.

Put it this way, if I got burned by a used car salesman on a lemon...I would make sure to tell everybody I know that they shouldn't go to that used car salesman. I could assure you that I wouldn't be content with knowing better. And there are a lot of these 'top instructors' that just come off as used car salesman, selling lemons to the public.

If you want to feel the real betting sensation you have to visit GameOn247 which offers tournaments every 15 minutes that feature Vegas style games and Sport Picks. Players use their skills to win prizes and become Today's Champion. This web site is for real gamblers.

Respect mofbirdie! You know what's good. GameOn247 is really a cool web site cuz there is real-time Leader Board that shows players their position versus Top 10 scores which increases the competition. By the way their interactive applications are very helpful to sharpen your skills to make money in real casinos or on the Daily Tournaments.

Just game on!

How do you get ibto the booth? Typically by being a former great player: Miller, Faldo, Wadkins et al. And typically these guys are players, not teachers. Players, by definition, don't teach. They know how to do what they do very well. Their concern throughout their careers was not what others were doing, and I think that's pretty obvious on the broadcast. Let's not confuse course strategy (playing) with swing issues; they are very different things. The only teacher in the booth is Kostis, and as Kevin said, it is one thing to analyse a swing for your student and another to do it in front of 5 milion viewers. He made his name in the early Golf Digest schools (with Toski, Flick, Love II,) but I think sometimes he could use a "brush up" on what we've lerned since then. Listen to McCord, amidst all the clowning, he has some good swing insights.
