PGA Grand Slam of Golf: Alternative Format-Field

Greetings --

Please share your thoughts on this little idea of mine ....

Alternative Grand Slam of Golf invitational criteria to allow for a field of 10 rather than 4.
I'm well aware that this runs completely counter to the current format.

A: Winners of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA Championship, Players Championship, WGC-Accenture Match Play, WGC-NEC Invitational, WGC-American Express Championship and the Tour Championship.

B: If not otherwise eligible, the winner of any official PGA Tour event (how many doesn't matter), chosen in priority order of rank on the November 6 2005 PGA Tour Official Money List.

C: If not otherwise eligible, and if needed to complete a field of 10, winners of any official PGA Tour event (how many doesn't matter), chosen in priority order of rank on the November 6 2005 PGA Tour Official Money List.

FYI and reference: November 6 2005 PGA Tour Official Money List -- http://fgf2001.100megsfree3.com/golf/Scores05/PGAMoneyList_110605.txt

The 2005 Qualifiers

1. David Toms (Accenture Match Play) -- Toms would certainly be out of the event, due to his recent heart procedure
2. Fred Funk (Players Championship)
3. Tiger Woods (Masters, British Open, WGC-NEC Invitational, WGC-AmEx Championship)
4. Michael Campbell (U.S. Open)
5. Phil Mickelson (PGA Championship)
6. Bart Bryant (Tour Championship)
7. Vijah Singh (Event Winner, #2 Money List)
8. Jim Furyk (Event Winner, #4 Money List)
9. Kenny Perry (Event Winner, #6 Money List)
10. Retief Goosen (Event Winner, #7 Money List)

Alternates -- Added to field in case of any pre-event withdrawals. Chosen in priority order of rank on the November 6 2005 PGA Tour Official Money List.

A-1. Sergio Garcia (Event Winner, #10 Money List)
Garcia would have replaced David Toms, who is recovering from a recent heart procedure.

A-2. Justin Leonard (Event Winner, #12 Money List)
A-3. Padraig Harrington (Event Winner, #14 Money List)
A-4. Sean O'Hair (Event Winner, #18 Money List)
A-5. Ben Crane (Event Winner, #19 Money List)

I like the major winners plus the Tour Champ - Woods, Campbell, Mickelson, Bryant.

In the current format of major winners, then it should just be the three. And if you must have a fourth, then it should be Bryant, not Singh.

Your idea is as bad as major league baseball's perverted concept of allowing wild cards to compete for the world championship, when they couldn't even win their division.

MJ,
The perversion is calling it a 'world' series in the first place! Having wild cards is merely an acceptance that some divisions are merely stronger, and until they seed all the teams and cap them all financially, there will be inequity.

Greetings ...

Thanks for all the replies. Your various comments mirror those I've gotten at other sites.

I've taken note of a little item here and at other bulletin boards where I've posted my hypothetical 10-rather-than-4 suggestion.

The "little item" is that not one person has mentioned Ben Crane, one of the alleged slowpokes of the tour, who is one of the alternates shown back in post-1 of this thread.

Probably a good thing that Mr. Crane didn't make the field. TNT's boring coverage might have been prolonged that much longer!

I wasn't even aware of TNT's coverage until I accidently stumbled across it with 2 holes remaining. After seeing the scores, I thought it was just as well. Matter of fact, this Grand Slam or World Series or whatever should be scrapped. Four zillionaires getting richer for no good reason.
