This issue may be out of place for this forum, but I need some help. I am an attorney and I have a client investor who wants to put up some cash to sponsor an up-and-coming professional golfer. I meet with him later this week for our initial consultation. My first goal is to have a productive initial meeting. Then I need to do some background research to help me draft up a contract. Do any of you guys have experience in this area, either as a player or a financer? I need to think of the terms that would need to be covered in a contract between the golfer and the investor. Also, how does one get on the PGA tour-- Is q-school the main way or are qualifier tournaments the route? Basically, if you knew of a golf phenom that had no money and wanted to go on tour, but needed some cash to finance that endeavor, how much would it take to get him started and what kind of return on the investment would be standard in the industry?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would advise your client to have the player evaluated by Brian. This might save your investor a lot of money and heart ache. To have a chance of getting through Q school the player has to play a lot of competitions to be match tough. These cost money to enter and accommodation and transport costs have to be taken into account. The player must also have their life geared around golf. You can not expect the player to hold down a job and do a bit of practice to get through Q school. So you must factor in living expenses. A friend of mine had a sponsor last year but his patience wore thin . If your client does not have very deep pockets he should think again . Simon Khan who recently won on the Euro tour used to play against my friend in mini events . I was told that he has gone to tour school about 9 times and was sponsored by TRAD scaffolding. I get the feeling they liked the guy and were not too concerned about the money. Unless your clients have the same kind of attitude this deal is likely to end in tears.

Hard to have 7 birdies and not be a solid contender. He went in the drink on #2, I think, and missed a 3-footer for par on another hole. It took -4 to qualify I think. Now on to the Iowa Open......

-1 for first round of Iowa Open -After a night of food poisoning, though-- leader is at -5. Its 3 rounds. 200 should win it.

BTW, I'm his sponsor! ;)

He finished -7 after 3 rounds. Iowa Open Organizers advertised a $75,000 purse on entry form and it turned out to be only $25,000. We are awaiting the final results to see how he placed.
