Poor contact with Never Hook Again -- the carry

I've been working on NHA. I can get the ball to fly straight now, but I've noticed a lack of distance and "clicky" contact unless I really nail "the carry". The hurdle drill helps but only so much.

How can I perfect the carry in order to make more satisfying contact?

The more I think about it, the more likely it is a toe hit.

My hands also never feel right. I struggle with anything but a "bonesy neutral" grip. Hands feel like they are smothering.

So in short, I'd say contact is smothered + toed.

Here's something that has confused me about the "carry" in this pattern...Is the carry more of an axis tilt (hip slide) or shoulder turn to get to the ball?

You may not be swinging left enough. I had similar issues until I committed in carrying and then swinging left, away from the wall. Carry, shake the sugar, hard left. That is my mantra.

I'm hitting some OK cut shots with NHA but still pull some a bit to the left (not as bad as before NHA). This is especially noticeable with lofted wedges. What do you think is causing this?
