I just wanted to ask, I purchased SD and Bman talked about popout. Bman doesnt like popout? I've watched you tube video of pros and all appear to have popout. I thought popout is how one gets wide and then one gets narrow in the down swing. I'm I missing something?

Lots of good players popout slightly, lots of them dont at all, it depends on the pattern really. I think when Brian talks about popout negatively he's referring to amateurs who who popout A LOT and over-rotate the LAFW on the backswing, getting the club really flat/laid off.

Only looked at McIlroy and Choi and they do not have popout in the videos I saw. For them, the clubhead doesn't get behind the hands till the backswing is at 50% or more of the way done.

See this video for popout.

you may be mistaking popout for the clubhead moving OUT more on the takeaway, that isn't popout. Popout is a handpath that moves OUT from address, has to do with hands and not where the clubhead goes.

While John Daly has a great pivot, the start of his backswing would be an example of popout. He overcomes it by a big arm lift and super long backswing which gives him time to get back into position on the downswing.

JMO, of course.

Ok,

So popout is when the hand go out away from the body, on the backswing, from their original position at address.

As I understand it, pop-out is not always bad either, depending upon the pattern. "Going up the wall" in Never Hook Again allows for some pop-out on purpose.

Pop out is bad because golfers tend to over-rotate the LAFW when they popout. When the rotate that LAFW too much, they get laid off. if they have pop-out and don't rotate that LAFW, they typically have a very Steve Marino-esque upright golf swing. I'm sure there are exceptions, but that's generally what happens.

Marino doesn't have popout. He is a good model for "Baby Fade" IMO.

That wasn't what I meant. I meant that if you have popout and don't rotate the LAFW, you'll have a steep lead arm like Marino does. But, just because you have a steep lead arm doesn't mean you have pop-out. Cantlay is probably a better example. He looks like he has a little pop-out, doesn't rorate the LAFW and has a steep backswing.

Would you agree that over rotated lafw is worse than poput?

Yes. There are some that can hit the ball pretty well laid off (i.e. Poulter), but most cannot or they may hit it well, but they hit it better not being laid off. I just wouldn't recommend pop-out, but it's the lesser of the 2 evils IMO.

Pop out is 'bad' relative to the SD pattern. I believe the club is not oriented in the correct position at the top. We want a shaft that is slightly crossing the line to promote that slightly out-to-right-field swing path. I can tell you that setting up for a draw with the right stance, grip, etc and then having pop out will be one of the most frustrating things that can happen to you.

A terrible , TERRIBLE thing for any one's golf swing! Personally I don't think you should need any (as in TRY TO). As for excessive amount .... jeez.
I remember reading articles in the 'mags' regarding rotation of the arm , wrist on the backswing. Of course most hackers overdone it with their no pivot, strong grip swings.

Hey dannyuk32,

thanks for you're input. I was thinking around the same lines, no rotation of the lafw. Do some pros rotate the lafw?
