Maybe described it a bit wrong. They go far, but start high. The short irons do fall out of the sky a bit though, and in fact I'm longer with the longer irons than with the shorter come to think of it....Maybe I need to go a flex down with the 9-SW. My 5 iron flies about 200yds and my 9 iron only about 140, so it would seem I'm getting the shaft to work with the longer irons more than with the shorter ones. Is that a normal phenomenon: softer shafts in the shorter irons? Would seem to make sense...

Honestly, it sounds like your swing. I had a similar problem last year because i wasn't providing enough forward lean with the short irons. In general you don't need to forward lean or deloft longer/mid irons much to still make them go somewhere because they have so little loft even if you deliver the same loft that is measured in a loft/lie machine and no forward lean they will still go a good distance.

Do that with a short iron and they are going to go really short. I had something like a 30 yard gap from my 7 iron to my 8 iron, it was disgusting. I had to fix my swing and not be so flippy/armsy. I had gained a lot of weight and i think fell back to an armsy swing because i just "could"

THanks for the comments Jim. If I understand you correctly you're saying:

KBS Tour: feels lighter and softer, including making the swingweight feel lighter. Flight a bit more DG-ish.

KBS C-Taper: feels distinctly heavier and stiffer, kinda like the PX and produces a similar flight to the PX. X-flex is a beast, S+ a bit more humane.

On this basis I would be thinking about the KBS C-taper S+ in the 3,4,5 irons (to get it up quick;)), KBS Tour X in 6,7,8 irons (to keep it down;)), 9-wedges KBS Tour S+ (for extra FEEEELING;)).

Sound a bit too far fetched?

something happened to me today...was weird.

I played golf with my friend today and I was hitting the ball pretty high with 3 iron, but it just died after the apex and was about 5 yard short to the green. (I'm using a s300 dynamic gold shaft for my mizuno 32's)
Then my friend said, hey why don't you hit my 3 iron and see what happens. I was like, man you are using a x-stiff shaft there is no way I can hit your iron. So I went ahead and hit his 3 iron (it was kbs x stiff). The ball was high as well, but it was penetrating and didn't die at apex. I continue to hit his other irons through out the game, and it was amazing. His clubs was so much more balanced then my clubs. It felt like the club was my arm where as my s300 was more like a hammer. The club head is very heavy and not well balanced. I never thought I would be able to hit a x stiff shaft...

so weird.

S300s tend to swingweight heavier than a KBS Tour. Have you ever been on a monitor? What is your driver or 5 iron data?

never been on the monitor

but with my new driver i hit about 285-290

my own 5 iron 175-180

friends 5 iron 185-190

my friend who got fitted said he got fitted in NY...he said he wouldn't fitted anywhere in LA coz nobody knows what they are doing. I think it's very true, which is why I haven't got my irons fitted yet. Only fitted the driver and 3 wood so far.

ps Although my friend's iron is x and heavier than mine club, it felt lighter when I swang the club. so weird

OK, you convinced me. KBS Tour X 3-7 irons, 8-wedges KBS Tour S+. Make more sense?

Sorry but no. Generally people will do the complete opposite and go softer in the longer irons to facilitate an easier load and higher launch and keep the mid/short irons stiffer to control too much spin and/or too much launch.

The only time i see people go back to something softer in short irons is say in a gap/sand/lob wedge because most people tend to not take full swings with these clubs and like a slightly softer shaft.

Tiger uses DG X-100 in all his clubs but his sand and lob wedge where he uses S400.

Hey Jim, do you think the the KBS TOUR S+ is eqivalent to about PX6.0 and the KBS TOUR X = PX6.5? Cos I'm pretty sure a PX6.5 and above must be horrible shafts for everyone except Alvaro Quiros (Rifle 8.1).

Look at the attachment i put up in post 2, there are comparable frequency ratings by club type for you to compare.

However note that by simple design KBS Tour / DG will frequency out lower than a project x or c-taper in a similar flex.

Just a side note....I had a "pretty good" player hit identical clubs with a C-Taper and a Project X....C-Taper higher launch/lower spin.

Mm, interesting. I've never been sure whether I like to PX type of ball flight or not. I dig it with the longer irons for sure (higher launch), but have never liked it with 9-SW. Even with the longer irons it kinda dives to the ground a bit too early for my liking. Grew up playing with DGs on the coast (always windy), so maybe I'm moulded by the idea that low and hangin is sexier. In that respect, probably KBS Tours fit the bill for me.
