Putting- Look at the hole!

Read Golf Magazine today-- little article on a study wherein they took statistical samples from two groups- one hitting while keeping head down and eyes on the ball and one keeping eyes on the hole/target spot. Second group did better.

So I immediately practiced it on the putting green and went out and played the front nine (3550 yards). Shot 38 with 13 putts.

I'm sold.

Very interesting. I like to look at the line itself, just in front of the ball. I focus on about a 4" to 6" segment of the line. Works great for me.

Mmmm,I don't know about this one. Most golfers have what you'd call a compensation putting stroke, in that they never actually start the ball on the aimline that they should and adjust their putting strokes mid swing so they never actually know if their mid swing compensations sunk the putt or just a good stroke sunk the putt. To me the putt is just a mini full swing and the hole is in the future.

In practice I do 'foul shots.' I look at the hole and putt, Sometimes I'm hot but distance control is what I want out of the drill, not sinking putts like it is some magic stroke. A nice way to change up a putting session.

Nothing new. Some pros who have compteted in tournaments using this technique. If memory serves, Johnny Miller won a tournament doing it. But I'm not aware of any tour pro who stuck with it.

Second test-- First round of my life without a three-putt. 28 putts, shot 79. This is not a drill for me, rather it is a new philosophy. I think the motor section of my brain needs the constant information regarding the target flowing over my synapses. It stops when I look down at the ball and I'm then going on memory. Take alot of trust though.

Didn't Jack Nicklaus say he had wide peripheral vision, and that he could always see the hole from about 20 feet and in? Maybe that's why he didn't have to fire at the pins.
