Putting, Putting, Putting

I've been working allot more on my putting after finally realizing that many strokes can be saved by having a good putting stroke. I read Brian's article on rolling the rock and found it to be most helpful.

Another thing I started practicing was looking at the cup as I putted rather than looking at the ball - especially for putts longer than 10 ft. It felt real weird at first but after about 30 minutes it felt very natural. It was amazing to me how much better my speed control was by using this technique. I was consistently lagging 40-50 foot putts to within 1-2 feet. I'm going to use this technique this weekend for all putts longer than 10 feet. I know it won't be worse than what I normally do.

Looking at the target the whole time or not looking at the target at all are about equally effective "drills". It has something to do with the way you turn your head to look at the hole--- either the tilt-a-whirl or the ferris wheel. The old time players used the ferris wheel; turned their head from directly over the ball slowly left so that first their left and then their right eye saw the hole. As though each eye were a compartment on a ferris wheel. And a bit like watching a pretty girl walk from the ball to the hole-- you want to take it all in;). Tiger and many many current players use the tilt-a-whirl which is kinda how you visually "catch up" with a full shot. They don't have their head directly over the ball, but parallel. Tiger has putted the same way all his life. Streaky, although, admittedly, what streaks! Someday it will let Tiger down. Bobby Locke sinks putts from beyond the grave:D[}:)]
My point being I think it easier to process data (short or long putt)from a ferris wheel than from a tilt-a-whirl.

After I have lined myself up, I look at the hole and trace back to the ball along the path that I think the ball should travel. Then I dont look up until about 5 seconds after the putter has crossed under my eyes. Of all the things in golf that I have always struggled with, thankfully putting isnt one of them.
