Putting Tempo

I have not yet had a lesson from Brian on putting, so I pose the question of whether the stroke tempo should be back and through at the same consistent speed, or whether there should be an acceleration of the putterhead through impact.

I found "my" putting tempo by hitting putts with my eyes closed. I then converted "my" tempo to a 1,2,3,4 motion and i do it every time i putt

Well i always used to putt very well. Once i started keeping track of putts i hardly ever went over 31 TOPS and that was usually a bad day. I'm not a 25putt kinda guy but usually in the 27-29 range. But then the putting started going away and the # of putts just started climbing.

When i started practicing i just kept missing this easy 15-20 foot putt. So i decided to try and close my eyes and putt. I took 10 putts with my eyes open and 10 with them closed. I made more putts with my eyes closed than i did with them open! So i knew i had to be doing something different.

What i found out was that my tempo was much smoother and more controlled with my eyes closed and therefore was making better contact with the ball and holing more putts. So i wanted to find a way to repeat this "eyes closed tempo" but with my eyes open. So i just created a putting counter in my head:

1) put the club down
2) slight foward press of the hands
3) go back
4) go through

The length of 3 to 4 will depend on how far i need to putt the ball. If i get too quick i'll hit the ball before i finish the 3-4 and i know RIGHT AWAY i missed the putt.

I've used a silent count also with good results.

Science says that a pendulum at a certain length will swing at the same tempo, no matter the distance traveled.

So I always putt at the same tempo. Just adjust the distance back and through for the length of the putt.

I count 1-2-3 to get the tempo, 4=small press, 5=back, 6=through.

Its not a tempo thing, but if you are leaving putts short, look at the hole when you putt. I'll bet you dont leave it short then. ;)
