Putting Tips?

How about some putting discussion, technique, tips etc.. As reported tonight on TGC. In 1948 Bobby Locke played the whole season without a single three putt!!!

Bobby Locke is my all time putting favorite. I wouldn't be surprised to hear he'd played all of 1948 with no 2 putts! And the greens of that era were like putting on peanut brittle. But I will say that as much as I've learned about hitting golf shots from the Doyle video and a Hebron book and Brian Manzella's expertise, I haven't gotten much about putting from them. Nothing they say (about putting) is insightful, or profound or anything I didn't already know. I even think some things Ben Doyle says on the video may be WRONG. (About putting now, not anything else--)

Specifically, I think there is one aspect of putting stroke which is not like a regular stroke. Thru impact I think it's important to keep the putter moving down the target line. At 90mph this would lead to a disasterous shot, but at 3-7mph it keeps the putt straight. It feels like a tiny tiny cut shot action thru impact. It keeps the hands and arms from their natural motion which is to follow the line around the torso and send the putt a little bit left.

The putting stroke can be thought of as 'miniature putting'...

...it still needs to be kept on-plane...the shaft goes into the hossle at an angle, just like any other club, so it MUST swing on a tilted plane...

...a wise man once said, 'The plane seems to be more left than most golfers imagine.' This seems to be the case with you...;)

Point taken, ragman, thanks! I've been putting really well for a year or so, so I'm taking a "dumb blond" approach and trying not to ask too many questions:D What I'm doing and what I think I'm doing may be two different things but as long as it works, hey...

"If you keep doing what you're doing, you'll keep getting what you're getting."

So, if what you're doing (or what you think you're doing ;)) now works, by all means, stick with it.

I watched the putting section of the Ben Doyle tape last night with the sound muted. Just watched him. "empirical" is the word Mr. Doyle uses for that.:D Problem with all videos is that they are not three dimensional (like Tiger Woods?):D But everything I saw made sense. It's good to get away from the words and just watch...

I think most players play with putters that are too long. Like the golf swing, the arms should hang down relaxed from the shoulders. If the shaft is too long, you end up sticking your elbows out which adds some tension to the stroke.

Ragman makes a good point, the putting stroke is on a tilted plane, so you want to keep the stroke on-plane.

Geoff Mangum's website is one of the better ones dedicated to putting.
