putting (yips)

This year is the worst year for me putting. It got so bad I changed 5 putters many grips couldnt make a 1 footer and have the yipps so bad it ruined my year. I`m lifting my head up before hitting even when I try to see the club hit the ball first. Now I`m thinking of using my shoulders to move the club . What do most players use, hands shoulders or something else. What should I do to go back to basics??/...joe

Joe,

Do you have the yips at all times?
Just in play? (Not practice)
When in the stroke do you feel the yip?
Which part of the body do you feel it the most?

Damon,
Check out the SAM Putt Lab at www.scienceandmotion.com for curable answers. Mike Olsen and Christian Marquart are very knowlegeable in this area of expertise! Damon, it was good to see you at the MAPGA Teaching and Coaching Sumit conducted by Joe Plecker, Director of Golf at Baltimore Country Club last Monday. Get ready to present at the TSPGA T & S in Pittsburgh in early April with R.M., B.M, J.P. ,D.P. the TSPGA Teacher of the Year, David Martin with MK moderating to provide the best informational experience the PGA can offer. Of course, this symposium is still subject to approval by the TSPGA. It will be the most informative, unbiased symposium golf has ever experienced in many years. I hope that this is the kind of arena provokes self-thought, self-interaction and cleanses the instructional arena of subjective and self-promotional bias. I look forward to our next meeting.

The curiosity of putting is the simplicity in just walking up to a putt, taking a cursory glance at the hole, and tapping it in - from extraordinary distances sometimes. We have all done that many times, so why do we have to make it so difficult.

It 'aint Rocket science and our arms and legs do not fall off if we miss - no one gets hurt.

In that regard, there is a lot to be said for Aaron Baddeley's approach - "look it" and drill it.

The trick is in managing the misses, rather than holing the improbable.

joe,
You need to reassign you brain attention.....yips are (mostly) all in the head, whatever stroke you use, but having said that, it bodes well to make your stroke as simple as possible...
You need to design an "over the ball" drill, which demands all your attention, with nothing left over for negative, or unwanted thoughts....

Agree.

Brad Faxon (a pretty good PGA Tour putter) was observed just knocking the ball around on the practice green and, when asked what he was doing, he said, "I'm practicing not caring."

What are the physical symptoms of the yips?

Yipping or Missing?

I've have the yips.

I don't anymore.

How'd I fix 'em?

Better Stroke. Better thought process.

I am coming out with a Putting Video—MANZELLA MATRIX PUTTING, that will explain my latest findings on putting and how to find the right stroke, and putter, for you.

So....

Joe, my good friend, until the video comes out, try this:

Get an old 3 iron. Go Putt with it anyway you want.

Report back with the findings.

Where and when is this Summit?

OT- From reading the above link.

Why doesn't professional golf have a dedicated scorer that takes score so that players don't have to be bothered, or risk incorrectly scoring a hole?

... And the Brian Barnes 12 putt, wtf.

Right. Hearing stuff like this leads me to believe that the yips, at least in some cases, is definitely mental. Either that, or there's some kind of disconnect between the hands and eyes. 12 putts are too many to blame simply on a bad stroke, IMO.

I can relate to the 12 putt bit. Once you miss the first 3 footer and the second you get so pissed you dont care and lose all focus and just keep pushing the ball all over the place till you get it in ,you just given up....joe

That's exactly right. There's no way he took 12 putts while trying. Unless it was on one of those mini-putt holes where they have the hole up on the top of a concrete mound.................and perhaps also behind a giant, rotating, red windmill.

Or with plastic lobsters in your way.
