Question for all...balance

If you want to improve your balance in the swing, keep your butt sticking out the back side to counter weight the force on the front side (I mean get it back and hold it back). It is like holding your hands out on each side of you when your walking on a rail.

So....balance (whether good or bad) is mostly a symptom of something else....?

And I also mean....more to do with mechanics than "talent"......i.e. a trapeze artist playing golf vs. any normal golfer.

I am surprised that no one has brought up the importance of the counterfall force in maintaining balance during the downswing.

LOL, i'm not that smart. But again, if you are doing the counterfall right in the swing, then you're balance will be ok.

Fix the damn grip/clubface/path/pivot.

Thanks Brian,

I agree wholeheartedly.

My thinking is, if a center can be realized through proper alignments to the clubface and the clubhead can be balanced properly between the two arms during the swing motion then balance in the swing can be learned.

Looks like Brian chimed in before me, but i was just curious to see some of the responses because i feel balance is very overrated in the golf swing and those who tend to have good balance tend to have good golf swings. I feel that your balance is a direct result of your mechanics you used in that golf swing.

Now, can you improve your balance? Sure, like i said i do it twice a week in physical therapy and it's really helping my injured ankle.

But can you work on the balance in your golf swing? I tend not to think so.

Thanks for all the insightful responses.

Hi Jim,

I remember hearing sometime back that a Texas High School (football?) coach had his guys take Tae Kwon Do classes to improve the team's concentration and balance. I guess they went on to win everything. Thought that was pretty cool.

Having a hard time understanding

The Golf Swing, to me, is one of the most meditative conditions we could possibly experience. I'm finding it hard to believe that balance in the swing cannot be "worked on".

From reading that Nicklaus fell back and hit it better, to me, is a response to his swing motion. But if he hit it better then his balance/swing response must have been close to perfect at impact.

So, I guess I'd have to ask where should we LOOK for balance in the swing? I can't believe is ends with mechanics only.

I liked Damon's training program for discovering balance as it seems to present conditions that allow one to be "aware" of balance.

But, again, finding a center and being able to align the club to that center would seem to me the first step in "working on" balance in the golf swing.
