Here is the Question...from the Newest Authorized Instructor of The Golf Machine, Tom Bartlett, G.S.E.B.

What is the secret of golf?

(the answer has to be in TGM and has to make sense...a trick to the REAL correct answer)

Congrats Mr Bartlett!

Homer gave us two Secrets of Golf in his great book, The Golfing Machine.

The first one can be found in 2-0: "The Secret of Golf is sustaining the Line of Compression".

The second one, probably the more well known one, may be found in 6-C-2-0: "Clubhead Lag is the Secret of Golf".

Now, here is my own perspective on how the two Secrets are related. The former emphasises the Geometry of the Stroke, and the latter has more to do with Physics.

The Three Imperatives: Plane Line ["Path"], Clubface alignment ["Hinge Action"], and Clubhead Lag ["Mash" or "Smash Hit factor"]).

The secret of golf is feeling pressure in the pressure point #3 - which means you have lag - the Ch. 6 secret of golf.

The secret of golf is to sustain the line of compression with clubhead lag while keeping the motion on plane. TGM is not well known about by the general golfing public and may well be the biggest secret in golf.

The Secret of Golf is sustaining the "Line of Compression".

You can have Clubhead Lag but no Clubface control, and hence unable to sustain the line of compression. You can have lots of Clubhead Lag and completely miss the ball too! However, if you want to sustain the line of compression, you must have Clubhead Lag. You must control the Clubface, Clubshaft and Clubhead. Also note that in 6-C-2-0, Homer puts the "Secret of Golf" in quotation marks.

The Secret of Golf is sustaining the "Line of Compression".

Brian this is what you said a couple of years ago...........................
"The secret is aiming a lagging SWEETSPOT (AND sustaining that lag through impact)."

Lets tie up some lose ends.

The "Line of Compression" is the Principle of Golf.

Production and manipulation of the "Line of Compression" (or what David refers to as the "antecedents") is the Mechanics of Golf.

The Secret of Golf is sustaining the "Line of Compression". The Secret of anything is sustaining the Principle.

Getting the ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible is the Objective of Golf.

Have a good day everyone!

Hey this is Tom by the way. I asked the question because I noticed on another site that they had concluded that clubhead lag was THE SECRET. That is when I questioned Brian. From my knowledge of the book and swing you could have lag and no line of compression, as answered correctly by some people. Now, I agreed with Brian that Homer didn't like to repeat himself in the book. So, he "basically" meant the same thing a different way.
Thank you Tongzilla for the cograts. You say that Homer gave us two (2) SECRETS. The book lists three (3) SECRETS. Which is "another way" of Homer saying the same thing. Can anyone find it?
