Recovering from broken right foot

It's been a slow recovery from a broken right foot last winter. I'm finally playing golf again, but can't stop swinging flat footed. I'm really getting into a bad habit on the downswing now. The ankle is still sore, but strong enough to work better than it is. How can I get my pivot back? Any suggestions

it had been a month since I touched a club, and about, 2 and a half weeks after I sprained my ankle pretty bad in a dirt bike accident... I went to the range yesterday... horrible, I thinned so many shots, NOTHING felt right, even when I hit it decent... NO compression, even down to the P wedge, and I hit my P wedge like a tour pro... I'm having a problem being flat footed too. My ankle is still in quite a bit of pain, I cant run on it, its the left ankle, and I'm left handed, so on my follow through it doesn't like to come up, especially with driver because I really go after it with driver.

Anyway, I feel for ya buddy, for only being 21, I have had quite a few injuries to set me back in my golf game... pulled muscle in back, broken hand, now a badly sprained ankle... all injuries that have taken months or longer, to heal completely and the back still bothers me.

Keep working on it though, whatever advice you get from here is usually golden.

what exactly did you fracture?

Did you have any therapy afterwards?

How is your right ankle motion- in all planes compared with your left ankle?

I did not break my right foot BUT i had a severe ankle sprain that took 11 months to heal completely. I ended up having the same problem as you, i created a compensated swing that left me "flat footed."

My fix? I went to the doctor, the swing doctor. I ended up having to see Brian to fix (get rid of) all the compensations that i created to still play golf while i was healing.

It ruined my ballstriking, and my whole year of practing to "get good." So make sure you wait until you are fully healed.

read Jim's email a few times

sprains are usually better than fractures in terms of ROM but have their own problems with pain and balance. About 100% (give or take a percent) of people that have fractures have at least some difficulty getting their motion back. You need to get back the majority of your motion BEFORE you start doing a lot with your swing.

Ideally you will see a golf PT or chiropractor - get your ankle motion back, know what to work on then see a pro in regards to your swing. Again that is ideal

I had a slight fraction on top and badly sprained ankle. Several months of rehab and continue exercising/stretching at home and I have about 70-75-% range of motion and strength. It's still sore everytime I play and I cannot move across the inside of the foot well at all. I was thinking about just focuing on rotating my torso more vs. trying to pivot. Thoughts??

Don't play yet-
Keep working on your motion - I'm sure you've been "tracing the Alphabet" or something similar with your ankle. This is primary- work on standing ankle motion where you are emphasizing your ankles rolling as they would in your normal swing.

Work on balance exercises to get back as close as possible to your pre-injury status. This is different than a normal ankle working on balance exercises.

Got to have the pivot- do small swings or the biggest, best swing you can make WITHOUT any ankle pain/compensation. This may be a small chip or a pitch. Accept that this is where you are for the time being.

work on the short game, putting/chipping anything that doesn't involve a lot of ankle motion.

It will pay off later if you wait
