Relative club speed

I was on Trackman this morning My 6 iron speed was pretty consistent at 84 - 85, but my driver was topping out at 95,
usually a bit lower. does his sound right? is there a rule of thumb on speed thru the bag?

ZAP

New
If i remember right my averages were the following 8 iron=84 5 iron=90 driver=106
Maybe about 2 mph per club in the irons?
I am sure there is some information in one of the Trackman newsletters if you read through them

"....rule of thumb.."?? Probably not, but let me ask you a personal question. You and I start the round with those clubhead speeds, but can you sustain them throughout the round as you fatigue carrying/pushing/pulling your clubs? ... I can't!!!

Oddly enough, when I ride the course, my score goes up ...!!!!

Okay... here's another thought. Most recreational golfers experience what is called "distance compression" as they go from short to long clubs. What happens is the distance between clubs decreases as you go from wedges to driver. Typically the 'compression' takes hold in the fairway and driver clubs where you get the same distance for your driver and 3-wood. Clubhead speed and impact efficiency becomes factors as the shafts lengthen.

Do you experience "distance compression" towards your longer clubs?

I dont know if i can maintain the speed - how would I? I walk whenever possible. I try to take a caddy. My question relates to my technique. It seems like I should be faster with the driver, but maybe not.

I'm going to gap my clubs in the next few weeks, so i can answer the compression question better then. during summer play I definitely hit my driver longer than my 3 wood.

Okay... but does your driving distance fall off late in a round, or does adrenaline rush keep you charged up?

Okay... so what clubhead speed do you aspire for... 105 mph? According to Newtonian science, you would have to find an additional 22% kinetic energy for a 10% clubhead speed increase? Do you think you're up to that effort? Perhaps Brian, mandrin, or art may offer some suggestions for a change of technique that will produce these large results.

Okay... but do you register 95 mph hitting 100% flat out on TM... and do you reduce your driver speed by say 10% to 86 mph for a playing safety margin? This would also reduce your kinetic energy by 22% as well. What do you feel?

What do you feel?

Are you serious with this question?

Last week my Trackman numbers for SEVEN iron and driver were 85-86 and 98-99 respectively.

I would guess that my 6 iron numbers would be +2mph faster than 7 iron?
Drivers hit at end of session...perhaps a little fatigued.

Thanks Jarod (and not just b/c its what i wanted to hear, but it was).

Mike thanks too - I think. I don't post much b/c I don't know much, but I'm reasonably sure I wasn't looking to share feelings. Kind of a
simple question I thought

sharkey... surely you can 'feel' your kinetic energy generation and output for each club, your secure driver speed and your speed degradation throughout the round. I can... and it's not a matter of 'feeelings'... it's measuring yourself when playing serious golf.

Ass for mgranato... just humor him... he's attempting to communicate with me and he needs pictures.... :p

Should be about 80-85% speed from 6 iron to driver. ie: Your 95 mph driver swing should be around 80 mph for a 6 iron. I think it should be even higher than Jared quoted, more like 102-103, but that's just my opinion. Everyone's different.

maybe the driver is not in sync with your swing where as the iron is? Try another driver.

As a rule of thumb (IOW, to be taken with a pinch of salt) - I've heard 2mph gained for each 1/2" in clublength.

I don't know the specs of the OP's clubs - but that rule of thumb could be pretty close to his figures.

But aren't all these 'rules of thumb' assuming that you are good enough to get the same out of each club? So for a pro or a scratch handicapper this might be true but I don't think you can apply it to normal golfers.

I was on FlightScope this week and my 7 iron averages 84.3 mph (max at 88 mph) while my driver was at 97.4 mph (max 102). I guess my driver speed should be a bit faster as well then. But to me it just means I am not using my driver as good as I am using my 7 iron (which is definitely true). The clubhead speed is not only dependent on how much power you put into your swing but also your technique. E.g. you might go normal with your iron but you don't manage to do that with your driver.

IMHO it can only give you an indication of your potential.

+1

Usually in cases like this there is an issue with weight, flex, or length with the driver. Sometimes just one of those, sometimes it can be a combination. Like Frans suggested, the fit of the driver is the first place I'd look into.

C'mon, Mr T, you have to admit it's kinda funny when the educated are reduced to using the vocabulary of the uneducated.

"Feel" is our word, go find your own. :)

Threadjack: there aren't enough Arrested Development references in everyday conversation...

Snarky: what kinds of shafts are in your irons, and what's in your driver?

A..ha, there's your problem SteveT. You've just been dropping way too many E's
That stuff will mess you up.
Just say no, SteveT, just say no....

I will never say "nooo" to feeeeling my way around in the dark .... but I will not do that for the golfswing by groping for "feeel" ...:D
