Reminder Grips

Does anyone still use them? If so, how large is the reminder rib. It seems like the ones I had back in the day had a pretty large rib. I had them back when I was in college and I'm not sure when, or why, I quit using them. They were pretty "automatic" when gripping the club.

I was just browsing the Golf Pride website (since mine are getting pretty ratty) when I noticed that they still offer reminder grips, and it's even available in the New Decade grip which is what I use most of the time.

Anyway, if anyone has any experience with them, let me know what you think.

The reminder on the ND's seem smaller than on the old school Victory's, but I think that has to do with the composition of the grip somehow. I started out using reminders, and can't even grip a club without them. I know most people hate them, but it does seem to make the grip automatic.

The problem with reminder grips is they have to be put on straight, whereas a regular grip does not. Otherwise you will be reminded to put your hands on the club crooked.

This is true and also why I put my own grips on.

The reminder on the Tour Velvets are more pronounced than on the New Decades. I think it has something to do with the grip material (cord/rubber on the NDs). There are NDs out there that feel more Ping-ish (less ribbed). I played TVs for years, switched to New Decades, and then went back to TVs.

Weird. From most of these posts, you guys would not believe how difficult it is to find round grips in the UK. Most places only stock ribbed - I've only ever found round ones by mail order.

It's just the opposite here in the US (well at least in Southern California).

Yep...same here in the backwater of Texas. I stopped by the local golf store after work and they looked at me like I was speaking Latin to them when I asked if they had any of the New Decade reminder grips. They spent 20 minutes looking through the catalog before I told them to just check the webpage.

Apparently none of the employees there have ever seen such a grip. Made me feel like a relic from the Bronze Age. I sort of wanted to feel one before I ordered a whole set. The New Decades are pretty expensive and I'd hate to buy them, put them on...then not like them.

Well, you have company here in NW FL. Not a reminder rib to be found.

Sad, because the GP Victory half cord with rib is still my all time favorite grip. If I knew how to get them all on the same, I would splurg for some V55 half cord ribs.

I wasn't aware of the rib size change. You'll find that few (if any) mid-size grips are offerred in a ribbed version these days so I was asked to make a set up using the GP mid-size New Decade grip (a really good grip imo). I used the wire you'd find on your typical "sprinkler head" markers for the rib so they have a pretty healthy diameter to them, though not as big as a coat hanger.

I couldn't believe how good they felt!! But now I don't know if they're legal!

Grips on woods and iron clubs are allowed to deviate from circular by having a slightly raised rib running along the full length of the grip (often called a “reminder rib”).
“Slightly raised” is interpreted to mean that the maximum and minimum diameters of the cross-section at any point must not differ by more than 0.040 inches (1 mm). Additionally, the dimension of the rib width, from edge to edge, should not exceed 50% of the grip’s internal diameter. While the first measurement can be taken using a pair of calipers, due to the nature of gripping materials, caution should be taken in making decisions in the field.

If you think reminder ribs are great, you should have tried oval grips! They don't make them anymore, but my dad still has a set on his irons. Wow! What an amazing sense of clubface orientation! And talk about fit your hand like a glove... the club feels like a tennis racket!

Seems to me like installing a wire reminder of Gauge 19 or 20 hardened wire would do the trick for a reminder and fit within the USGA ruling of 1mm...
