Rory McIlroy - Odd Hip Movement w/ Driver

It happens

I know this is about Rory, although, I have a junior student that does this "hip reverse" through impact very noticeably. He is a wirey player with some good speed both hips and hands. His hips get real open through impact separation, then as his forearms rollover his hips reverse directions, then he completes his pivot to finish. Funny, this is something that we've been working to eliminate or at least minimize, especially with his shorter irons as he often gets over-rotated with hips and trapped with his arms. Trying to match him up a bit more. Does anybody else have a student with this motion. Also, I would like to post his swing but not sure how to, let me in on how to post a video and you will see it, filmed on Casio camera at 210 fps. Thanks

Kinetic Chain Snap - Reverse Hips Motion at Impact, It's Like a dance...

2 Handicapp Junior Golfer

Does he try to keep his foot down?

I thought of this with McIlroy but then I thought that all right-foot-downers likely will not reverse-rotate the hips.

It's like the hips want to unwind then the foot is pressed (/held) down and they don't.

Gary McCord just discussed this during the round. Literally, a minute ago.

It's not Rory just talking. Titleist measured it!!!

does this swing have a similar move?

IMO - no. However, it does give a clue as to what is really happening with young Mr McIlroy, I think.

Firstly, I do not believe that it is physically possible to stop, reverse, then recommence, a violent pivot motion in one continuous movement.

The "clue" that I think I see in your vid' is that the golfer seems to draw his butt back and away from the target line towards the end of his pivot motion.

This gives an impression of a pause, hiccough w.h.y, in his rotary hip motion.

Exaggerate this move and you may well have the answer to the McIlroy conundrum.

Just found a slo mo or Rory that may be a bit easier to spot.

Definitely snapping the kinetic chain.

The video tennisdu posts adds a really important piece of info to this discussion. Rory's hips open A LOT at the beginning of the downswing. In fact, it looks to me like his hips stop spinning simply because they must: until his hands catch up, he can't open them anymore than he already has. If you look at :26 and :27 you see that he's almost facing the target and he's still well before impact.

But this would mean that the hips aren't consciously slowed down, but rather than he opens them as hard and fast as he can and they have to slow down to wait for the arms.
