Tiger will TiVo the event in case he's asked specific questions about it. He's not going to sit there and spend 8 hours a day for 3 days watching it live.

As far as a Tiger captaincy goes can you imagine him: Talking to the media for two years about it, hanging around "B" events to see who's on their game, picking out shirts, scouting out the course ahead of time, picking out the wives' party gifts, etc. Then talking to the media again about everything. Sure.

Oh he might have the "title" one day, but he's not going to BE a captain as we know it.

tiger will still be a distraction, cause the media will ask each team member "how they feel about Tiger NOT being there" 20 times each during the week!

Duties you believe make someone a true ryder cup captain: "picking out shirts" and "picking out the wives' party gifts". If those made your criteria I'd like to know what falls under the "etc" part.

I'm one of the people that doesn't get the idea of team golf. Who cares. Golf isn't a team sport. It would be like having a one on one basketball tournament with nba stars every other year. That would be an interesting novelty, but it wouldn't tell you anything about real basketball.

Golf played as a four-ball competition (2 2-man teams playing each other head to head) is as traditional as a hickory shaft. Golf may be an "individual sport" but best-ball/four-ball matches are one of the ways how the game has been and will always be played, both recreationally and competitively.

Most of my competitive golf is played in a 4 ball/low ball setting. There is a ton of pressure not only to post a score for yourself, but you got someone depending on you too.

The most pressure I have ever felt was playing in our city 4 ball match play tournament.

I like stroke play tournaments too, but as far as pressure goes, it doesn't compare to 4-ball.

I agree completely about the pressure in a 4 ball match. I play a lot of comps these days, and I find stroke play events more relaxed.

But I would make one modification: while a 4 ball can have pressure, it's NOTHING compared to the pressure in a foursome match. Alternate shot is the hardest format in golf. It's impossible to have any rhythm. In a match last week I did not hit a single putt until the 8th hole, and it was a big pressure putt. And the weight of not wanting to let your partner down is huge. I wish I'd played foursomes as a kid (like everyone here does). I'd be a better golfer today.

And yet, it will never be how the game is played to determine the best players in the world. The same is true with hickory shafts.

More Captain Duties....

Talking to the media about pairings. Talking to the media about the course set up and who has an advantage. Explaining your captain's picks. Adding your opinion on the night time entertainment.

Coming up with pairing strategies depending on earlier match outcomes. Pouring through statistics to see who may be better teeing off on odd holes vs. even holes in the alternate shot play.

Breaking up fights over the ping pong games. Making sure the boys get to bed on time.

When Tiger gets in his late 40's and is fading away, I certainly see him wanting to spend his last two years doing the captain thing before he retires to the broadcasting booth.

I was with you until this. Tiger in the broadcasting booth? You're kidding, right?

I wouldn't be surprised if Tiger up and relocated to somewhere in Europe or Asia for his retirement. But I think we're getting ahead of ourselves now :) .

I once played in a scramble where the winning team got a free windbreaker. It was basically like the Ryder Cup.

:) You made a funny!

The Ryder Cup is so European... like wearing a man purse.

Team golf is silly, and who would ever expect Tiger to waste his time on something sooo inconsequential. It's like asking him to play at the Honda Classic.

It's a shame Sergio can't excel at real golf.

Yeah....tongue planted firmly in cheek.

He's likely to say goodbye on a Sunday night after a Major win and dash off to a private island for a few years. No hanging on, no senior tour, no announcing, some appearances for his charities.

The ONLY reason he could hang on if he, for some reason, needs to get to 1 more major to get to 19. But I see him getting through that stretch as no. 1 and that's how he'll go out.
