Setup/Impact alignments

In setting up I usually set the club behind the ball and set upmy body accordingly accordingly.

Just as an incidental finding tonight practicing my setup at the range trying to setup a little more behind the ball that If I set up with the club ahead of the ball (square to target), then moved it behind the ball just before takeaway (A little like Nick Price used to do with his putter) then the clubface appeared a touch open (as I believe it should be just before impact) and with hands a little ahead.

I hit some good shots from this procedure and wondered why.

When golfers ground the cub behind the ball, are most of us setting up around the lowest point of a swing being behind the ball?

Is this a reason for heavy contact/flipping?

I am slowly making my way through TGM and this site and wondered if anyone else has any thoughts on this? :)

Is this a form of impact fix?

hmmm...
interesting thought. never thought about it that way, but i can see how you could become less ball bound and more low point oriented that way....

It doesn't matter where one grounds the club. The low point in your swing is usually opposite the left shoulder and if you position the ball correctly behind the low point, you should be able to always have a low point after ball contact - if you hit through the ball, instead of hitting at the ball. The idea of hitting through the ball (at an aiming point about 4" in front of the ball) is a mental preparatory thought that occurs prior to starting the backswing, and it doesn't depend on where you ground the club at address.

Hmmmm....

Well,

I really dislike forward hands at address.

But, putting the club in front of the ball---sort of a "Low Point Fix"---can't hurt, and will help a lot of folks.

I use a lot of "past the ball" posing to help my swing when practicing.

This is exactly what I have been doing for the past 2 years when I started reading TGM and about low point. I started this procedure with chipping, noticed how I was getting crisp contact then proceeded with full swings. My hcp got from 11 to 7. I get many people asking me why I do this and I explain to them that I want to make sure my club is going to pass thru this spot. I have also noticed that I need then to position my shoulders correctly so that i do get plenty of right arm. All in all a very good routine to ensure a correct set up and posture.
