I want to work a lot on my short game this summer. Just bought Over & Out and have been reading what's on the forum re the short game. Anyone have any recommendations for books on the short game? Any that I should stay away from?

The one Brian recommends and I like a lot is Paul Runyan's Short Way to Lower Scoring. It is out of print so you have to find one second hand.

dolanski, nothing against books, I have Pelz's book, hear that Runyan's and Mickelson's books are both good reads, but I recently got a short game lesson and it really enlightened me. I'm a 10 handicap right now, and shot 77 my last round only hitting 7 greens in reg. I got up and down 6/11 times which is about 30-40% higher than normal forme. Typically I got up and down around 20-30% of the time.

I'd highly recommend visiting with someone who can show you how it's done as oppose to reading about it.

Geoff Mangum has some good stuff on putting.

TBall88 - what were some of the keys from your lesson?

Tball, I hear you on seeing someone. I know that's preferable. But it's just that my experiences w/ instructors in Seattle have not been great, and I thought maybe I could work some things out on my own without having to drop a few hundred dollars to hear nothing more than the standard GD tips.

You know it was pretty much basics, the biggest thing for me was that I had far more hands and arms involved in my chipping than I realized, so he had me chipping with a ball between my arms, which helped a ton.

I was shifting my weight, which was leading to inconsistent ball contact, and also had way too much tension in my right arm. He had me let the left shoulder drive the motion and almost make the right arm limp. Lastly short backswing, long through swing.

Point is, there was nothing really ground breaking, but I needed a different set of eyes to look at it, I would have sworn I was staying on my left side and not getting handsy.

Rule 12 can be applied for pitching too?....My chipping improve a lot with this method...but I did not know that it can be applied in pitching because the the ball doesnt not roll too much when I pitch.

I think Bob Rotella has some really important things to say about putting, chipping and pitching (in that order).

obviously, technique becomes more of a factor as you move from rolling the ball to pitching it up in the air - and positive thinking by itself won't get you out of a bunker - but routine, trust, touch and concentration are huge factors in the short game and I think Rotella deals with these issues as well as, if not better than, anyone else I can think of.
