Shorter Backswing

I was watching golf last night and see that Ernie Els is trying to make his backswing shorter.

Man he was hitting some great iron shots.

Does anybody think shorter is better? Not Doug Sanders short if you remember him.

It depends on the person... sometimes I don't realize I come way past parallel like Mickleson, and thats not good for me, others can play that fine. You have to find a hapy medium that your body is comfortable playing. and learn how to strike it well with that swing.
Side note, just because you take it back shorter, doesnt nessisarily mean, shorter distance, there are a few, that hit some long balls, with shorter back swings. a perfect example is J.B Holmes vr. John Daly...

Horses for courses - Eg The big easy

I think ernie is getting the "Butch Harmon" treatment - massive pop-out move - reverse shift - short (laid off) backswing - sweepy release. It is not helping his game because it is going against all his natural tendancies and strengths. Think back to Ernie 93 thru 96 when he was playing his best stuff. Double shift - Big arc matching up with slow and lateral hips - one of the best pivots for a big guy the game has ever seen - effortless power. Why oh why do you want to get rid of that great combination. All he needed lately was to re-discover his old pivot and blend his arms and hips better - that would stop that cuppy left wrist at the top which is causing all his hang-back hand savers.

Tell butch to go look at some tape - Funny he was asked on Sky Sports tonight what is going wrong with Ernie, his answer of course was he is putting badly - so would you if you are having to save par form 25 feet every hole!!

I think it's athlete specific as well.

I posted a video of my swing a short while ago. I hadn't seen my swing on video for a few months. I find the longer I swing back, the higher my arms get. Also this means I have to give my hands a longer time to drop back into the slot before I can rotate my chest (or else over the top).

Some guys seem to be able to the club WAY back, and in the downswing they seem to be able to wait forever before turning their chests, and taking the club towards the ball (Vijay/John Daly). Seemingly others, like J.B. Holmes don't seem to like waiting for the club to drop, so they only go three quarters back and start down with a lot of power.

It's a good question though. I'm just guessing the answer is just very golfer specific.

You are right about Butch.

Freddy Couples got the same treatment short, short, short on the backswing.

I too struggle trying to shorten my backswing, but I also struggle with too much arm runoff after my shoulders have stopped turning...then I definitely have to stop my body to let my arms catch up, at least that's what it feels like.
