Shoulder Alignment

Just a question on shoulder alignment at impact. Should the shoulders be somewhat open to the target at impact looking from a DTL perspective? I have a tendency to keep them more square to the ball and was curious if this is not an optimal position and what i would need to do to alleviate it

here is a recent 3 Iron practice shot (DTL and face on)

I dont think there's a 'one size fits all' answer. It depends on a lot of other factors in your swing.

Hmm, so with my swing, any tips on what I should do with this? Simply attempt to rotate more? Drive the right shoulder down more? Relative to my other possible swing issues, should I not really worry too much about this?

Getting to the point for you

Hmm, so with my swing, any tips on what I should do with this? Simply attempt to rotate more? Drive the right shoulder down more? Relative to my other possible swing issues, should I not really worry too much about this?

Here's the factors that are related (cause and effect) -
A) Throwing the club at the ball - losing lag pressure - flipping - they start half way down or before - however the largest effect shows up right after impact - see the right hand from face on.
B) Pivot stalls when you do A above
C) Over-emphasis on "eye on the ball - head down" - is a hang over from ealier years when you started and focused on that - instead of the flipping issue. Now, it's ingrained and doesn't help you - just supports and adds a little to the Pivot stall.

So

to the layman- you're swing looks pretty good - upon closer inspection - some serious flaws. As stated above - the real starting point from a procedural perspective - you need to feel lag pressure better, maintain it past impact - also understand while there is a "release" in golf - there is no feel of release while you make the movement. If you understand that, believe in it and take the time to work through it - you'll have a chance to make it to the next level.

When you throw the club at the ball "with your hands" - you are able to allow the clubface to close more and get it lined up in the manner that it requires for you- without body rotation closing the face for you. IF you maintained lag pressure in the hands, don't "feel" a release in the movement - then your hands don't close the clubface nearly as much - and your body will turn through to A) maintain the lag pressure on your hands and throughout your pivot and B) create the proper clubface alignment. Initially - you'd probably push the ball - until you body adapted or you helped it move differently.

The pivot motion or in your case the lack thereof - is an effect - and best worked on by attacking the cause with some supporting work on the effect. While getting away from the head down- eye on the ball - ingrained movement - will add to and support the change for a better movement.

A few things to juggle - and something that you'd need to work through by yourself.

Mike, thanks alot for that detailed response. I could sort of see something being quite wrong with my swing without being able to identify it, but furthermore I could really feel something was not quite right too.

I will try and focus on these aspects and hopefully at some point make a breakthrough

Thanks

The flatter the sweetspot path, the more open the shoulders

Kevin, I only now realise what you mean here, recently having bought never slice again.. makes sense what you mean by sweet spot path now. The NSA vid is great and has given me loads of things to work on. Should have bought it sooner

I've only just started trying to incorporate some things, better pivot, use of the twistaway, trying to maintain the FLW well beyond impact.. its all very new and still need alot more practice to incorporate these things properly, but here is an updated swing
