Snap release question (with Manzella Video)

you mentioned a pupil of yours changing from a sweep release to a snap release. can you briefly explain the differences of these releases, and how to go to the snap release? thanks

In TGM, Snap basically means "late."

Sweep = "early."

....

How to learn it?

There will be ppl who can answer this better than me....

But the HANDS themselves must just hold on and nothing more.

Some ppl need a clubface fix first....slicers especially......but flippers also......may need to do some twistaway work.

So you hit low hooks for a while....then you need to learn a Snap (or SnapER) release AND some tilt to not hook it.....like Brian says....it gives you a reward for having a late release and axis tilt (whereas if you have a way too open clubface there is NONE).

....

Some other relavant things:

-get hands over your left foot at Impact

-SWING.....pull...etc.....with the body (learn how to just hold on with hands)....this creates some rotation....some "CF"......some physics........I think once you get that down you basically learn to aim it more forward of the ball.

-hit divots....see how far forward you can hit the ground.....try to do it with your head back some...

-"hit the box"....see Brian's logo...shaft is up against the "box."

...

I like to feel like I'm dropping the club from the top.....then getting my left shoulder UP as hard as I can through the ball. (when I'm "dropping" what's basically happening without me trying to consciously do it is I'm sliding my hips and aiming my hands.....you aim them with your hip slide basically....then left shoulder UP to get that REEF! through Impact...)

...

Something in there is bound to help you.

I got most of this stuff from Brian BTW. (in here)

Birdie man,
Thanks for your comprehensive (I think) and very informative post! Wish they were all this helpful... I've been trying to get better compression - would love to hear that loud "CRACK" some are able to achieve. I'm trying to keep my right wrist bent (some twistaway) and just drag it down - and not letting my right arm straighten too soon. Feels like a no release swing. I think I've got the down, and the forward, but might be missing the out! Maybe that's why I'm not getting the CRACK?

Thanks,
Ben

You're welcome.....I like helpin ppl.

And besides....I'm @ work and it's SNOWING....(rahgrghrhg1!!!)....so I do this. :)

Not sure about the OUT.....

DO you slice normally?

How do your shots go when you use a twistaway type clubface?

With irons I'm hitting a boring, draw - could be a little higher. Miss is a pull/draw/hook when I don't keep my right arm bent, forcing shoulder to go down. Driver is a nice high draw.

Yep, was a slicer when I was young. For the last 20 or so years I've been aiming right and hitting a slight over-the-top pull to the target - fairly straight. Swing looked very similar to the one Loubert posted - hated that chicken wing. Now setting up square, and using some twist-away, which seems to have helped my plane. THANKS Brian!

Remember folks, it's just a drill, in real life you would allow her to come out of her tilt and finish the swing.

This is a great drill to get students who lose their axis tilt THROUGH the ball to keep it through the shot. Do this a few times and then you let them do it on their own.

The head.

The head shouldn't move forward should it?

Now, surely, her head would "release" more like the first swing without me and the club there.

But, the head had VERY LITTLE to do with the changes.

I was showing a typical upgrade.

I wasn't showing HOW....:)

Amazing how many things improved in the second swing:
-Backswing was tighter
- OTT move gone
-Increased lag
-Increased tilt
-Better release

just want to point out, what I see:

No Adress position (perhaps this is the hidden secret?)

Video 1: early rotaion of the hip
viedo 2: long hipslide before turning

video 1: right foot lifts early
video2: r-foot keeps longer on the ground

video 1: head-slide - no axis tilt - flat right shoulder
video 2: no head slide - axis tilt - right shoulder down the plane

video 1: right arm straightens very past impact
video 2: right arm straight just after impact (but more bent before impact than video 1)

much more roll (horizontal hinge) in video 2
much more lag in video 2

could it be that Brian pulled more her swinging out than she tried to hit in the first video ?

Snap vs Sweep

In the 1st swing, would any of this be classified as 'throwaway' or would it just be a sweep release? The club and her left arm are 'in line' prior to impact.

What is the determining factor in determining a 'snap release'? 90* angle of clubshaft and left arm when hands are hip high? What is the latest a 'snap release' can begin. What is the earliest it can begin?

Is it correct to assume that the later a 'snap release' occurs, the slower the hand speed must be as you approach the impact area?

Looks like a very athletic young woman with a bright future under BM's tutelage.

I will post the HOW I DID IT soon.

Impressive Brian! Looking forward to the "HOW I DID IT" explanation. I need a little of that too...How much yardage did she pick up?

Not amazing at all...

Just a little old fashioned TEACHING.

I will tell you all HOW I did it, but let me give you all some hints:

WHAT I DIDN'T TELL HER:

1. I never used any terms except "storage."

2. I never told her anything about her pivot (although I have in the past).

4. I never said anything "conventional" about aiming point

5. Never mentioned extensor action

Hmmmm......
