Start down from the top

I am working on the same thing and it has been a game saver for sure.
Thank you Kevin!

Matt

are you saying you are thinking of taking the hands in towards the body on the downswing rather than outward to the ball? i'm just a bit confused on how it would look

Yes

And if you use a little SDish backswing they may be a little closer in already at least for my top of the backswing position.

I like how I can save the out for later in the downswing.

curtis: would this seem like the right path------from the start of the downswing, drop the hands down (as in letting gravity have them fall) and then take the club to the ball? or are you saying immediately and continually have them go in? i'd almost think this would have you coming over the top. i know it's got to be simple, but i don't know where i am not following. sorry and thanks for any clarification.

First off, let me just say that I'm NOT even close to an expert when it comes to the swing. I'm just a golfer. Anyways, I'm sure you could let gravity take the club down but I'm basically pulling it down and in. Before this "new move" my shoulders would have opened early. Now they stay pretty closed as the club goes down. Did you read that thread? If so, the vertical line running down from your chin is what opened my eyes.

I'm sure Kevin can describe this A LOT better than I can.

just re-read the thread. now i get you on it. just what i needed to as i let my hands/arms get away and i came from the outside and hit ugly pulls/draws. thanks

Toss? Not sure, I've stopped trying to toss it long ago. Never had much luck thinking toss. I might have been tossing it tonight, all I know is that I wasn't thinking it. All I was thinking about was getting my hands to go IN and DOWN right away. Rather than OUT and DOWN.

PS Thanks, and yes, it is a nice feeling! It's always nice to leave the course/range with a smile. I take the game way too serious so I certainly don't smile enough. :)

i just went to the range and tried this "down and in" move from the top of the backswing.

this is the single best piece of advice that i have seen on this board for my golf swing.

i love you. seriously.

Yes, I agree.

BTW, this is getting strange. I'm in love with lookingtolearn and I think he is in love with Kevin. :)

I think this has helped me as well. I understand the "down" part, but I don't get the "in" part. The hands go "in" where? I hope someone can help.
Thanks,
paul

Think of the line running vertically down from your chin. The hands do NOT want to get outside of that line. So they have go IN.

Think of it more like the hands "stay" in as they work down. They will in fact move slightly outward, but the hand path will feel vertical.

Ok, I get this! I need just one more clarification, is this "in" on the backswing, the downswing, or both?

For me it's all about the downswing. Just got back from playing and had some great shots. Probably hit the best 6 iron and my left and it was EFFORTLESS.
