How much bend in the left arm is acceptable at the top of the backstroke? Because of lack of flexibility, and possible rotator problems, my left arm is very bent a the top, perhaps as much as 45 -60 degrees.

If you are a swinger AND use horizontal hinging, the real question is, are you capable of doing a full left arm roll through impact without rotator cuff pain? The full roll is MUCH more important that a straight left arm.

To add to that... the full roll is much more important than quite a bit in the backswing..... the gyroscope 'can' get you back on 'track' if you trust it...;)

If you need to practice full roll for a swinger's motion, you might want to check out this:

It is a fairly effective aid, but IMO should be a bit heavier than it is.

I'm just wondering DDL, do you associate length of backswing with power?

Not exactly. In my case, I equate more power with more height on the backswing. My arms don't seem to be getting up high enough. Too much around my body, and with a bent left arm, seemed like too much slack,

. Been using the visual that Brian mentioned of riding up the wall he used with Toms. Also have had great success lately with eliminating slack not only in the arms but in the body. I use the right arm takeaway to rotate the shoulders, which lastly rotates the hips. The hip rotation seems to be both the end of the backswing and the start of it.

Mizjoe....I hadn't thought about it that way. Now that I think about it, I might be doing an unintentional angled or quasi vertical hinging that doesn't seem to bring my arms forward after impact.

Brian...thanks for the comment. Stil brainwashed by the geniuses out there who preach a straight left arm as a must on the backswing. The only other instructor I have seen who doesn't is Dean Reimuth.
