Karsten Manufacturing, makers of PING Golf Equipment, cast allof the own clubs at their Dolphin Foundry.

Dolphin's quality is so good, they do work for the military and the aerospace industry.

Birdie, the S-58's are very good.

Good. Nice to know the quality is still there...:)

Never hit those toing, but all this club talk has got me on another quest..
Checked out the Maltby site yesterday, http://modena.intergate.ca/business/golftech/maltby1.html and
http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_MA0062
..am thinking maybe I'll send for a couple of 8-irons from him just to see if they live up to the promise.
Anyone on here use them?...

I cannot comment specifically about that design but I can give general comments:
Over the years I've had good luck with both Golfworks (Maltpy) and Golfsmith. They have very consistant quality and good information.

But for heads, shafts and set make up, the worlds best, bar none, is Tom Wishon. If you take your golf seriously then go to: http://www.twgolftech.com/home.php
If you are into clubmaking in a serious manner also visit www.wishongolf.com

If you don't see the latest wizbang design that is being pushed by the big manufacturers and pulp magazines in Wishons offerings you can be assured that the expected improvement is only in the mind of the advertiser.

thank you all for this tread

you cannot imagine what this type of info means to a newbie in golf. just because i read this about COG being more near the hossel , today i started setting up with my Mizunos mp30 more toward the hossel and lo and behold miracles pure impact and extra yards 4-p so thanks again

Could be.....

Are the Hogan Apex irons any good?

tong,

Can't say as to more modern Hogan Apex irons, but I have a set of Hogan Apex Redlines that are circa early 70's that are really sweet. Also have a set of Burke "Tommy Armour's", circa 1960's, with True Temper aluminum stiff shafts that are just a joy to swing as well.

With both of these, the sweet spot is a good 10mm or so toward the hosel from the exact center of the clubface. This is due in part because of the length of the hosel that manufactuer's used back then. That combined with the shorter blades tended to move the CG toward the hosel.

why doesn't PING stick to "the tried and true"?

Callaway and TaylorMade--they were longer. And, there was the stiffness of the zzlite. With the Zings, Karsten introduced the KT shaft with a larger tip diameter for improved feel. Those critical of the that head attributed it to "hot spots" and there was failure of the shaft resulting in a modification (KTM) leading to the JZ which may still be offered. The Ping long irons could be found in the bags of those loyal to the forged head.

Thanks Jim....

The zzlite shaft was mighty stiff alright. I had Ping Eye 2s when I first 'got better' and shot in the 70s. They were about a club short in distance and I hit very few greens, but was always right close to the green so I could fix things up with a chip and a putt.
