Which is more beneficial to a great strike:
Downward force into the ball/ground or forward force toward the target / alternate target line / right field????

In other words if we were to design a pivot - would we want to design one to create greater downward force or forward/outward force???

It would be nice to hear from the great ball strikers on this forum and what they feel.

Depends on what you are trying to achieve and what flight of the ball you want. If you want to fade it, focus more on down, if you want to draw it, focus more on the out.

Ok great Brian - what do you think of the Bobby Jones video I posted specifically his pivot? (Not in the context of any thread).

Always some down...

I thought I posted this earlier, but here it is again:

Don't know about the great ball striker part, but I'll start this off;

Thinking of an iron strike with the ball on the ground

The most efficient strike is one in which the forces of impact are aligned with the line of compression. There will always be a downward component because the club is swung on a circle, but each club has an optimum downward component depending on the length of the club, and the desired result of the golfer. Too much down for any particular club and you increase spin, which is uaually not the best choice if your objective is optimum distance. Not enough down, and the ball is likely not going to meet the club at the sweetspot (thin).

Even with a driver, there is still a downward component unless the ball is in front of low point and hit on the upswing.
