Switch to hybrid??

Thinking about getting a hybrid to swap out my 3 iron. Seems like they have been the rage for the past few years. Are there any downsides to a hybrid? Basically I'm wondering if I'm giving anything up by switching. Accuracy? Ability to work the ball? Etc.

Any success or horror stories are welcomed. Thanks

Best one out there if you are a better player is the Adams Idea Pro hybrid. However don't go for the new "pro gold" hybrid UNLESS you want to hit it straighter. The Idea Pro is a little easier to work and the Idea Pro Gold wants to go straighter due to the squarish design and harder to move around.

It's also the #1 hybrid on the tour.

most hybrids are really upright in there lie angles, to help the average slicer. so better players struggle with hooks and pulls with standard hybrids. the titleist 585h or taylormade tp hybrids are better for that

I'll take a look. I was originally thinking Wishon. Thanks

Pecky, thanks. I hook so I'll have to make sure I get the right one. Haven't sliced in years, no thanks to Brian! :)

Wishon 321LI is a great head - especially, it is designed to be build to the MOI and length of an iron it is replacing.
My advice - avoid wood-like hybrids with long shafts - hell knows what they replace in the bag - surely, not long irons.

Cheers

My TaylorMade 19° TP Hybrid.

When Jack Nicklaus was the best player in the world, he was excellent with his 1-iron.

He could hit it further, but he used it from about 210-230 in general.

He was probably the best player in the world for that distance, as well.

If they had time machines, I'd go back to 1972 with my TaylorMade 19° TP Hybrid, and play best of 7 with Jack from 220.

He'd have NO CHANCE if I also could use current golf balls, and I can't beat anybody.

Tiger doesn't need a Hybrid, but, unless you have 120mph+clubhead speed, get a hybrid QUICK.

I really like mine, and the Adams with the Matrix shaft is pretty good as well.

Will you give up anything?

Sure. Probably a shot or two a round that you used to take to finish.

Can someone explain why upright lie angles would help the slicer and cause hooks and pulls for a better player? I have this exact problem with my two Taylor Made hybrids. I have the version with the moveable weights (Rescue Dual); they are set to neutral.

Just picked up the '08 TM Burner Hybrid. So easy to make excellent contact. It feels like I'm swinging ia 7 iron. I'm going a touch too far left with it, but a 15yd miss left is better than an UGLY 3i yardsale miss.

The Idea Pro Hybrid has come down in price with the introduction of the "Pro Gold". The PGA Tour Superstore has it for $149.

I added a second Idea Pro to my bag after the price reduction occurred.

imagine hitting a wedge with the ball 12 inches above ur feet. if you dont make allowances, the ball will go ALOT left. this is because the lie angle has been artificially altered to be more upright. this causes the face to look more to the left. imagine putting one of those magnetic sticks that you stick on the clubface. increase the lie angle, ball goes left.

ps the standard rescue dual (ie not the tp version) are really bad for going left. the tp versions are better for that

Hybrids

I have used a Wishon 321 3 iron hybrid for 3 years. Now I have the newer Wishon 785 iron hybrids in a 2,4, and 5. I am going to add a 6 hybrid. The 5 iron hybrid is high, straight and 5-7 yards longer than my 5 iron.

If Larry Mize replaced his 5I, 4I and 3I with Hybrids, why not me?

Sports Authority had a sale on the Adams 5, 4 and 3. Got the 5 and 4 and haven't looked back.

Go for it !!!

I know everyone is ga-ga over the Adams, which is a great club, but the Cleveland Hi-Bore (last year's model at least) is very good.

I demo'ed it, and bought the demo club. It was a very quick match for me.

Heres my question...

Do you go with a graphite shaft, or steel?
I'm going to pick up a 3 and 4 hybrid very soon, and I'm thinking of going steel, to maintain my accuracy as much as possible...

I have used the graphite hybrid shafts from Tom Wishon and have been extremely happy.

Rick, do you think the technology on the 785's are right up there with the Adams's and TP's? Seems like the design has been around for a few years. Have a Wishon driver and love it. Thanks

Yes I do, the face is very hot. I have many Wishon clubs and continue to purchase from him.

Well, I finally hit a hybrid. Yep, they work! Hit the Adam's Pro and the Tour Edge Exotics. The Tour Edge is HOT, almost too much leaving a gap. So I started hitting their 5 hybrid to replace a 4 iron. Was hitting basically the same shots with the Adam's 4 and the Tour Edge 5. Gonna see what Wishon has that is the same design.
