The Carry

How come I do not see a lot of pro's do the carry? It seems like it helps a lot of "better" players. What are the pro's doing that they don't need the carry?

PS Does KJ Choi carry it some?

Just my two cents...I would think that since rotational swings are the big thing that the carry doesnt lend itself well to that. Hunter Mahan and Rory McIlroy come to mind.
I mean, when I think about how fast those golfers rotate their hips and get their right side through the ball, I just dont see the carry being benificial for them.

But, then again, I could be way off...

My guess would be that, if you need the carry, then it's going to feel like an over the top move to you. Maybe quite a pronounced OTT. But the point is to get you close to on-plane through the ball, maybe just a little out-to-in if you like a stock fade.

If you're watching the pros, then even the faders are going to look pretty close to on-plane. Most of them aren't going to look as if they're doing anything as extreme as the carry feels to you the first time you try it.

I think "feel is not real" gets over-used, but I think it applies here

Carry....If you NEED it.

The "Carry" happens in EVERY GOLF SWING WORTH A DARN.

I repeat—every.

The "thang" about the Carry is WHERE THE HANDS ARE CARRIED.

Obviously, we refer to carry as OUT carry, but there is FORWARD carry and DOWNWARD carry.

Just remember....there is ALWAYS a carry.

When I take over the tour one day, they'll be more "out" carry.

Thanks for the response Brian. I've been using some carry lately with mostly good results. My problem is that I'm deathly afraid of push fades so I overdo the carry and end up with a slight pull. Can't wait for you to straighten me out (pun intended). :)

My bad, I thought of the Carry as being more of the OUT carry like NHA...never occured to me that there was a forward or a downward carry.

Once again, thank you Brian!

Off the top of my head, Retief, Davis Love, old Tiger Woods, John Daly, Jack Nicklaus and Paul Casey. Casey's swings vary but most of them have quite a bit of carry.

I played in a scramble tournament recently to raise money for the college team. I was amazed to see a great player carry every time he hit a fade. It was subtle, but for a fact, he has never even heard of Brian Manzella. Talent just seems to find a pattern. Good on ya, BManz.
