but it proves one of MANZELLA"S 10 rules of GOLF INSTRUCTION:

"Almost always, good (and great) players, have no idea what the heck they are doing."
I have noticed this also. One of the best players I know just failed to get through first stage tour school. The thicko turned up for the first round of Tour school without ever seeing the course before shot 77 then in the 60s for the other rounds. He has no idea what he is doing yet is one of the best ball strikers I have seen. Brian: How do you account for this type of phenomenon? Do these savants just stumble on a good swing? It makes me think that nature more than nurture has more to do with becoming a great player.

Brian said it right both way - neither a large part of the talented nor the average among golfers (in general) have a clue what they are doing. The PGA tour has a lot of savants. Thing is that every human being has some of that quality and character, but it may be in an area other than golf. A lot of people go through life and never find that little respository of "natural," that may belong to them. Others may know it, but it doesn't get identified as such, but if your are making a few million a year with yours, somebody will notice.
