Lots going on in my noggin ...
Boy, this post sure has me thinking ...
I grew up on really shaggy fairways, and everyone played "preferred lies"
Therefore, I really learned to pick the ball off that tall, fluffy lie. Fast forward 20 years, and I'm still VERY shallow. The other night at the range, I only had my 7 iron with me, and I hit about 20 balls right on to a target green, and I swear that the spot I hit off of barely looked disturbed (sad part is that I was trying to take a divot
).
I know that I am underplane and shallow, so I have been trying to work on doing the opposite - swing steeper and more left. Most people would have been happy with those 20 7 irons that I hit - they were good results - super high and at the target, but I know that they are not hit correctly. There is no compression, no real penetration to the ball flight.
So now after I read this, I feel like I'm closer to some "ideal" than before - I need to keep my instinct to be shallow, but add some lean and move my path left. But then I'm thinking that adding lean moves the path more to the right, so I'll really need to swing more left. Would appreciate any thoughts as to whether I'm thinking about this correctly, and whether I should try to aspire to this "ideal", which seems closer to my current swing, or keep trying to do the opposite of what I'm doing now.
