There are three stages: Thoughtless being. Thought. Return to thoughtless being.

Do not confuse the first and third stages. Thoughtless being is attained by everyone, the return to thoughtless being by a very few.

Ok, I'll bite what is this about?

It's about how we progress in the game, from a mental and physical standpoint. I've heard the progression like this:
1) unconscious incompetence
2) conscious incompetence
3) conscious competence
4) unconscious competence

You go from not knowing what to do and not doing it well, to knowing what to do but having to think about it, to knowing what to do and being able to let it go on auto pilot.

I'm using unconscious meaning "I'm not thinking about the mechanics of the swing, I just swing without any thought". Although I play pretty well in my sleep :p
