The Heavy Driver

Well I tried a lightweight driver (or a least shaft - 47G, thin grip, etc.), and saw 5mph increase of clubhead speed on the launch monitor. So some of these ideas can work.

I wouldn't doubt for a second that there are some changes in the set up of a club that would give you increased clubhead speed. But not all of those that do will result in greater driving distance. And of those that do, not all will be neutral with regards to you ability to control the ball.

Well yes there could be other factors besides weight. Let's be clear I didn't buy the club, but based on trying about 8 drivers and shafts, it seemed that lightweight had merit. Same head with other stiffnesses and weight of shaft were slower. Is 5 mph significant enough for some folk? Thirty yards of increase would need about 13 mph increase, all other things kept constant.

The quote by Jack concerns equipment. If I remember it correctly, he was referring to the period when he used a driver with much stiffer shaft than he usually used.

Exaggerated swings can be great - Lee Trevino, Jim Furyk, among others. It seems to me an exaggerated swing sets up natural limits to the swing shape and aids repeatability (flame me if I'm wrong).

Thanks for clearing that up, jpeck!
