Couldn't achieve that unnecessarily held on post impact position without sticking the club in the ground

I agree with you 100%, but he hits it great - manufactured positions or not. One of the purest I've ever witnessed.

I followed him around in the first round of the 1987 Mony T of C at La Costa when he swung like this.....changed my golfing life.

Mac O'Grady # 1 wd solid 1990 slo mo by Carl Welty.wmv - YouTube

When people talk about Mac's swing, they always talk about positioning, but the real beauty is the sequencing.

I've seen some very poor copies of this golf swing, and they've almost all made the same critical error when trying to coordinate the hips, shoulders and arms through the impact area. As a result, they'd either get a wipe or a flip, and they had to choose. The guys that liked low fades would choose the wipe, and the guys that liked high draws would choose a flip.

What's that critical error?

They don't have enough side bending in either direction, which is absolutely necessary if you want to be effective with the small amount of cg shift that a guy like O'Grady had in his swing. He doesn't swing this way anymore but I wish I could. I can do a reasonably cheap imitation of it.

Let me say one very important thing about "centered" swings. They are preached as "more simple" but they are actually much more complicated. You have to constantly change the direction of all your body parts to keep your body's cg from moving a lot (why? because you are trying to keep the body cg "somewhat" fixed as the club, arms, shoulders, knees, etc are all moving on different planes). They can be done very well, but are quite elusive to master. One bug in the system will bring the whole thing toppling down. After everything is looked after, it is true that you don't have to rotate the arms "as much" but good luck getting there and may the force be with you.

This is spot on. Anyone who tries to do this pattern alternates between low bullet wipes or high (mostly) over draws. You'll get nirvana for a time, then its back to the battle.

Just too much to try to sequence perfectly all the time. Great range swing, poor course swing for most folks IMO

WARNING: I AM NOT A DOCTOR!

But, I digress...

Dr. Feddler Von Schtickle and I, Skyped for about 20 minutes today. He wanted to assure all of the 'fella's', that any "tendinitis" would never occur at P-6. He said, significantly, "Your safe at P-7, P-7.1 P-7.2 and P-7.3, respectively." Any tendinitis would usually occur while waking in the morning or after a long nap.

Ahh, so glad to hear sensible talk about what a fool's errand it is to dedicate oneself to emulating Dr. O'Gleno in any way other than seeking what he sought. The centered swing is indeed an over-rated promise. Educate your hands and your body will get you there.
