For me it is always about swing verses drag in pitching and chipping. Understanding a pitch is truly under the ball.
1. Enough backswing so I don't need to over accelerate the handle coming down which causes to much lag.
1.a - always a slight to really open face and with vertical shaft at address
2. A quiet pivot with no lateral or rotary movement. The lateral and rotary creates to much lag and drag.
3. Widen by straightening my right arm on the way down
4. Keep the grip pointing mid body throughout
5. Allow my lead wrist to cup through impact
Lastly, I practice pulling up on the handle through impact, but never think of it on the course.
Great description.
The Ernest Jones version of swinging, as Brian describes it, with a quiet pivot and right arm straightening and left wrist cupping through impact. It is amazing how easy it is to overpower this shot with your pivot and drag too much -- that pivot overpowering has been very difficult for me to unlearn (on full shots, too!).
Also, for me, I had to eliminate the twistaway I tended to use on some full swing shots and carried over to this shot (without even realizing it).
