Tim Clark is a great chipper and pitcher, a South African man joined my club 5 years ago and he had seen Tim as a junior and raved about his short game and reckoned he was the best South African at that area of the game.

Tim Clark has/had the chipping yips and also had to develop a very unusual pitching method because his forearms are oddly configured. I think he uses no wrist hinge and leaves the face wide open on all his pitches.

He is quite a short hitter, a very good putter, and very good with hybrids. I think the fact he can often putt from off the green helps him A LOT at Augusta, where he tends to do well. He putts from all sorts of funny places with a long putter.

I took the players who qualified for these statistics for the last 3 seasons only. That was 118 players total. Here's the top 10 for Advanced Total Driving

1…Charles Warren
2…Joe Durant
3…Heath Slocum
4…Boo Weekley
5…Nick Watney
6…John Rollins
7…Robert Garrigus
8…Hunter Mahan
9…Jay Williamson
10…Zach Johnson

And here are the top 10 for Adjusted Short Game

1…Chris Riley
2…Rod Pampling
3…Briny Baird
4…Ben Curtis
5…Kevin Sutherland
6…Justin Leonard
7…Phil Mickelson
8…Brian Gay
9…K.J. Choi
10…Mike Weir

Could you combine those metrics and come up with a "best all around" type stat. How do these lists correlate with Fed Ex points? Money List?

This would take some time and some thought.

Part of the problem is that Danger Zone play has a much stronger correlation to Adjusted Stroke average than the other 3 metrics.

So if I wanted to weigh the DZ play more, that would be a little tricky because the stats that go into DZ play are different from those that go into Putts Gained.

The other problem is that the Putts Gained statistic isn't readily available, yet. I spoke with the main guy at MIT who created the stat and he said that the PGA Tour was going to use a similar stat that Mark Broadie from Columbia University has come up with. I *think* I can figure out how the Putts Gained stat was calculated, but that may take some time.

So for now, the best I could do is just take the rankings for Short Game, Advanced Total Driving and Danger Zone play....add them up and sort them in ascending order.

I also usually work these stats against Adjusted Stroke Average instead of Money or FedEx points. The problem with money and FedEx points is that one can play in more tournaments and get into the bigger money events more often, and earn more money. Adjusted stroke average figures in what the field's average score was...so if it's in a Major, the average score is higher and thus somebody could shoot -2 and be doing quite well against the field. Whereas someobdy could be playing at the Bob Hope and shoot -11 and really not be doing all that hot.
