Thin Shots?

The swing looks pretty good but I am not a fan of your type of wrist motion. You have a super strong left hand grip, very cupped left wrist at the top and more worrisome is that you maintain the cup so very deep into the downswing. This may have something to do with your tendency for thin shots.

Have you tried a more neutral left hand grip and a flatter left wrist at the top?

The grip will be changed shortly. However, direction hasn't really been an issue so I haven't changed it. What influence does a strong grip have on thin shots?

Not so much the strong grip but the cupped left wrist deep into the downswing.I don't see that much on tour, the closest probably Geoff Ogilvy but very rare. There is'nt a heck of a lot of time to get it flat by impact.

All that lag so far into the d.s. with that strong of a grip is causing you to hang back so you can get room to get rid of it and release the club without smothering the shot.Just think what kind of a shot you would hit if you got on top of it and rotated more left.

I would say in general you need more hip-turn and less hip-slide in the downswing, a little carry and a little tumble with that turn will help get a little more descending blow with a higher VSP. In doing this you may want to weaken your grip to eliminate a pull since your path will be further left, but I'm guessing doing those things will help make better contact and produce a nice boring flight. Don't be afraid in practice to feel like you are sticking the club in the ground, with your straight left arm and athletic shoulder turn you will be able to find a happy medium in shallowing out the attack with the proper VSP.

Are the thin shots a constant problem, or just sometimes?

Maybe it's just a ball position issue.

Somedays when I'm struggling, I'll move the ball position 1/2 an inch, and start flushing it again.

What would be an appropriate way to reduce the amount of lag without releasing the club early? Straighten the right arm earlier in the downswing?

Thin shots have been a constant problem. At least a few in every round. I play the ball up near my armpit with most clubs due to my steep AofA.

My guess would be that with a flatter left wrist you would not have as much "lag angle" in the first place. This will probably reduce the amount of shaft lean at impact.

You can achieve a greater amount of wrist angle with a cupped left. You need extremely flexible wrists to be able to get that much wrist lag with a flat or slightly bowed left wrist.

Thanks, that makes sense. I wasn't taking into account how much easier it is to maintain the angle with a strong grip.

Ah! the million dollar question, I wish I knew the answer. That lag looks like it's ingrained and imagine what kind of other shots your going to hit if you change your grip and try to reduce the lag. It might make you cry uncle and wish you left it alone. I mean your a Pro and a scratch or better player so it ain't that bad, but I guess you can experiment.

Well I experiment quite a bit with my swing and it's worth hitting some bad shots if long term I'm more consistent. I'm just sick of digging trenches and hitting it thin. Thanks.

One thing i don't suggest you do is try to straighten your right arm on the downswing to release earlier. Most people would kill for how well you prevent running out of right arm. It's a gift from God so don't give it back to him.

Have you been on Trackman. With that lag angle of attack and VSP would come under scrutiny.

Also, apologies for before but its happened alot.

when the clubshaft lines up ith the left arm right after impact - look where your hands are in relation to the lead hip.
Now, look at some youtube videos of pros and they are much different than where you are.

The first half of your downswing looks relatively fast compared to the second half and the follow-through.

I haven't explained what or how to fix your issue - just pointed out areas to look at.

Mike O,

Thanks for the observation but I'm not sure if you realized Rory hit it in the water on that shot and Camilo pulled his driver and missed the fairway. Their hands do look different through impact though. :)
